With a new Morrisons store and an "upgrade" to the A45, we have a bundle of new traffic lights.
All the lights have what look like to have mini cameras fitted.
Have the traffic light controls caught up with modern technology and the cameras there to assist or are they more street surveillance thru the back door?

Normally Headlight Sensors for Busy vs Non Busy Junctions at 'Out of Hours' periods.

How does that work then? Does it change the duration of the signals?

Pretty much, either acts with or over rides the predefined timer, some are light sensors others are movement sensors, typical example would be a SuperStore or a Industrial Estate road that meets with a Main Roads in a Off Peak period so the Main Road gets a Green Light most of the time.
They also use Hieght or ground Loop Sensors in Bus Lanes so as to give Buses more chance of a Green Light when approaching Traffic Lights.

I think those sensors are square.
The ones i am talking about look like these.

they are either traffic cams or they are the new breed of ip traffic sensor/camera..which is a camera which can detect movement as well as transmit pictures....
