As some of you know I have a new every day car.
I really, really, really want to keep the Omega.
I had an idea of just keeping it and doing it up to go to the Vx shows that are on. but this means SORNing for most of the year. Our garage has always been too small so it would have to stay on the drive.
now I know that people do ''semi-retire'' their cars and bring them out for ''special occasions'' as I read about it in last months' straight 6 magazine.
but whats the logistics of it?
i'm thinking that as it has to be on the drive then we buy a car cover. and start it up every week and run it for 15 mins or so.
what do you think?

IMO it would benefit more from getting a run on the road where all the moving parts can get moving as its not just the engine parts that will cease up. I know it doesnt justify paying the road tax just for this though so its hard to know whats best. It would be a shame to have to part with it though.

thanks HC. That's the thing.. for what I would get for it ill be giving up a car I really love for peanuts.
thing is to keep it so I cud take it for runs then I would have to tax and insure it

I guess it depends on you location, but probably even once up and down the road would be a big help once in a while and unless your next door to a cop shop then I'd do it when the roads are quiet, unless you have somewhere you can take it that doesn't require tax. The cover will definitely help as well but be careful to get the right type of cover as certain types will make the car sweat underneath and will do more harm than good.
I know what you mean about letting go, I've already decided that I wont be selling mine on unless I really have to.

cheers mate :y
the great thing about putting it in to retirement is I can do work on it when I want... as opposed to having to do work as its our only car.
-
I'm coming up to retirement in October and certainly don't intend to give up my cars and although mechanically there's not to much to do just the odd cambelt etc, but there's cosmetics to make them as good as they can get,so I'm going to spend this summer doing as much as I can with the body work, and interiors with the intention to get two of them resprayed.I crunched a few numbers and figured out that to tax and insure all three with limited mileage policies I can do it for around £1200.00 all in, and although I'm intending to work for a while I'm looking forward to spending some quality driving time in my 3 Amigos :y

good stuff mate :y
I too got a few things to do. still got to replace a disspac (lazy bastud I know) :-[
get a new arm rest/cubby hole lid thingy
wheel arch rust has come back (only one, al others are sweet) so i'm going to give it a go again myself in the summer.

If you are on the ABS forum, recently was the thread about a cover for an LC. Those type are very good, let the car breath so to speak underneath it. The chairman has had one on his LC for at least six years. They are tailor made for the car to be covered, not a one size fits all job

Same here, n/s wheel arch to be replaced and I think a full respray is in order...funds permitting ::)I'm going to do a list and really scare myself :o
-
I'd certainly be interested in those covers as it was the intention to look for some in the near future :y
-
cheers guys, ill check out the ABS forum :y
do we reckon running it in park for 15 minutes every week would be sufficient?

I'm there varche lol

Heres an idea have you not got any close friends or family that would use it as there main car and they tax and insure it on the understanding that you want it back every now and them.

Never start a car when laid up unless you're going to drive it. It does more harm than good. Give it some fresh oil before laying up, put the battery on a conditioner, handbrake OFF and just leave it. :y

Seconded :y
Add to that... If you're planning to park up for longer than 6 months then a teaspoon of oil into each cylinder through the plug hole when it's cold and left and before re-starting it, remove fuel pump relays and crank it over for about 30 seconds (in 4-6 shorter bursts) before starting it :y

Thanks guys. out of interest whats the reason for it being no good to start it every once in a while?
so basically battery out and on charge, new oil, spot of oil in cylinders, handbrake off, leave it :y

You will fill the crankcase and exhaust with corrosive products of combustion, yet the engine won't run long or hot enough to boil them off, so they will build up, causing corrosion, while the car is laid up.
But.. put it another way: Why would you start it periodically? ;)
I can't understand the reasoning that suggests it's a good idea (and it's not just you. practically everyone laying up a car seems to add the proviso that "it'll be OK, I'll start it up every week..."). Maybe they think it'll make it easier to start when they put it back into use? In practice, the opposite is probably true.
The engine won't forget how to run, and as long as a few precautions are taken when starting a completely dry engine (e.g. crank it on the starter with a little oil in the bores, and allow the oil pressure to build) it will do much less harm than occasional running.

If you have 4 axel stands, it might be a good idea to take some of the weight of the suspension if its not going to be moved for a while.
Not jack up until its off the floor.
Just a few inches to reduce the standing pressure on any joints :)

This will help the tyres more then the suspension, IMHO, but still a good idea. :y
Also, reduce tyre pressure and, if possible, cover the tyres if outside, to stop UV light from degrading them.
A desiccant dehumidifier in the interior will do no harm and prevent the damp building up there.
You can go as far as you like... ;)
If you're going to cover the car, however, bear in mind that the cover can chafe on the paintwork in windy conditions and damage it. Some covers also get very damp in the wet and will hold the damp against the bodywork, actually promoting mould and rust. There will also be less breathing into the interior, and no sun to warm it up.
On balance, I'd probably not cover the car, but wash it occasionally - or put it in a garage. ;)
-
Ill swop you a nice little pug silver bullet for it :P ;D
-
thanks for the info guys. sorry one more quick question about what you said kev..... what exactly is ''cranking on the starter''? :-\ is this taking the fuel injector and pump relays out so it cant start but will turn over to get the oil pumped round?

Yep :y

i would also remove the wheels or find a old set to put it on
the reason being that with the car stood in the same place you can get flat spots on the tyres,of course jacking it up will stop this until the local toe rag wants some tyres for his car and comes along one night with his wheel brace and says thank you :y because he hasnt had to jack the car up to help himself!!
