Title: Traction control and ABS lights come on all of a sudden.
Post by: Joiner on 28 March 2013, 18:20:30
Hi all,

I am sure my miggy is daring me to weigh her in!

Coming home from work and giving it moderate oomph up a hill the TC & ABS lights came on and stayed on. I tried disconnecting the battery to see if it reset itself but alas they both stay lit up when you fire her up. She drives fine and stops fine without any juddering or anything. Another thing, I tried the pedal trick to see if that could shed some light and the light flashes continuously, no 4 didgit sequences to shed light on it, just flashes non stop.

Anyone have any idea what could be causing this please?

Cheers :y

Last time I saw this problem, followed driving over a pothole in the road. Turned out to be a wheel ABS sensor. You can test these with a test meter if you disconnect it. Make sure the resistance matches up side to side, but not necessarily front to back. One that is significantly different to the others or open circuit is dead.

This could so easily be the case Andy, we have so many potholes around here now, I think the council is hoping that locals will start to fill them up with rubble to save them the inconvenience of fixing them. That being said, is she ok to drive?

It is safe, but remember the ABS and traction control systems aren't working. Hopefully we have seen the last of this lovely spring weather!!  :-\

If its not an abs sensor (one on each corner!), it'll be the abs ecu furbarred.  As said abs and tc aren't working.  You could see speedo packing up and a loss of power steering assistance.

Search on here for abs ecu :y

Just got in after picking missus up and it has cleared, both lights now off. TC is also working and can be switched on or off via the button on the dash.  :y

Fingers crossed :-\

No codes are usually stored either with this fault.

Think it'll come back though mate - faulty abs ecu starts off intermittent and gradually gets worse till the abs and tc lights on all the time :(

Failed ECU doesn't give a reading on the speedo either ;)

Not always initially - on our old Elite Estate initially lights on only, then after a while speedo intermittent, the not working at all and steering heavier.
