Hi all,
The bonnet supports dont hold the bonnet up anymore. As soon as I lift the bonnet up fully and let go it immediately, no delay, comes back down again under gravity.
Is there anything I can do to the supports (unsure what to call them). Can I clean them, re grease them etc etc?
Thanks
Alex

Need renewing

Replace. If you find a sensible price for new ones please advise. But usually a breakers.
...confirm both struts are good before purchasing used though, not one failed and one good, which will still hold the bonnet up, just, until a good gust of wind drops the thing on your head. ::)
-
OK interesting.
What is the official name for them please? Then I can search the breakers.
Also what would be the procedure for replacement? I have not looked at how they are attached but Id hope it was relatively easy to swap them out?
Thanks

Replacement is the only cure. There are part numbers for pre-facelift & different numbers for facelift :-\ :-\ Having fitted later struts to my pre-facelift, I think they're a little stronger ..... maybe to hold the grille of the later car's bonnet.
Gas strut is what I'd call them

There's a cup at each end of the strut & a ball on the bonnet & wing with a clip that holds the cup onto the ball. :y

Thanks very much,
What do you think of these?

Very easy to replace, two torx bolts, then pull the spring clip out on the top joint. Hold the bonnet up with one hand, remove strut off the ball, fit new one on ball, rest the strut on the base so the holes line up, let go of bonnet, fit bolts, push clip in. Job done.
But as both yours have failed by the sound of it, use a suitable length broom handle to hold the bonnet up while you work.
Or, just use said broom handle when needed. :-\

Thanks for the guide, what do you think of the ebay link I posted up? Good buy?
Thanks
-
Ebay is shite!
Oh, you mean the struts, ;) I'd want to see them in hand first. Test the resistance against a failed one. To be sure they are not also failed.
-
Good point, ok I will do some investigation into local breakers.
Thanks

Which reminds me,I have the same problem so mst add it to the growing list of things to do to the Omega - if winter ever goes away. I do have some spares,so theres no excuse really. :-[

Mrs Bear's boot had the same issue (2004 Focus). Pattern parts from eGay, £14 for two. Only needed one. The failed one was obvious as it was leaking. Really easy job. Got spare now for when next one goes :y

OK I got the ones I was looking at on ebay and it is amazing the difference in compression force needed for the old vs the new.
I was able to install them incredibly easily so thanks for the tips everyone :) I am just so pleased when I do something on the car and it works perfectly 1st time

Sure is/was. Now to look at the battery lack of power issue
