high all
yesterday my battery was totally flat and rashly i put it down to being old, mixed with the cold weather, so i replaced it today. now the battery light is on permenantly, also in tick over the engine revs surge
does anyone know the reason?
thanks in advance Martin :)

I had exactly these symptoms when the alternator regulator failed. It charges for a second, then stops and repeats ad-infinitum. Each time it starts charging the revs drop due to the load.
Worth going through the starting and charging guide just to make sure, but might well be the regulator.

Yep dodgy alternator mate ;)
-
thanks for that :)
the garage down the road has organized an auto electrician to come on monday, can anyone give me a rough estimate of how much i should pay for removing and fitting an alternator, also how much if the electrician can overhaul it.
(i'm a bit scared as they were once going to charge £1300 to do head gasket, when it turned out to be £24 HBV, so i'm armed with laptop and OOF maitenance guide of how to do it :-)

I got a refurbed alternator from Vx last year - cost £100 all in :y
Fitted it myself though so can't help with fitting costs.
Edit - assuming you have a V6 mate
-
It's probably the regulator - £20 for a new one.
Alternator change is probably an hour's work.

I bought a used alternator for my 2.5 V6 estate three years ago from a man in Girencester for £10 and popped it in. It's still working perfectly 28000 miles later.

Yes it's a v6
Thanks to everyone for the help - a busy day sorting tomorrow then :-)

hi all
refurbed alt was more than £150, with £45 extra you have to pay which is returned when you give your old alt in
using the maitenance guide on here i was going to replace the regulator inside the alt at £61 from drive vauxhall with the discount, but then they found they couldn't actually get hold of one
finally i contacted megavaux who had a box of 6 alt's for my car, one arrived this morning for £43 delivered. i'll now use the oof maintenance page and give the brushes a clean before it goes in.
thanks again for the advice :)

Yep but my dealer gave me a "TC" price with extra charge (trusted me to pop old one back - which I did)

Has anyone had bad experiences of Vx 'remanufactured' items? I bought a remanufactured starter for a petrol 2 litre Omega five years ago and it failed after two years. I bought a replacement from a scrapyard on e-bay and it is still working after three years. They seem to fail in the solenoid section. I have never had a failure on a V6.
