Interesting use of the English language ...

"DVLA "made" £10m ......"

Implication .. a "profit" of £10 million ... or.... the truth ...  they "charged" £10 million of the work done to provide the information.....

I quote from the last paragraph ... "We do not make a profit on this service – the fee merely covers the cost of processing applications."

but its the Daily Fail ... never let the truth get in the way of a good story ... give it an hour and it'll be a "tax on motorists"

Of course .. those who want to find cause to blame the government will do so regardless... but the facts appear to be that the companies requesting the information are being made to pay for it .. or would those against the idea expect the taxpayer to pick up the bill instead ???

:)

Why do I think that's possibly a rum statement? As I understand it, the parking companies have access to the DVLA's database and may retrieve data at a cost of £2.50 per entry. It costs £10m to "process" this access? Hmmm. :-\

Incidentally, Entwood, the way you always defend the government suggests that you are a member of the Conservative Party.  ;) ;D

As someone who deals with Info Security, £2.50 is very cheap for data access.

I belong to no party, never have and never will.... and you can infer or imply whatever you want .. it is after all an easy way to attempt to discredit another persons viewpoint ...

I defend the truth and honesty, and I attack falsehood and lies.... unfortunately there are too many people who think that headlines are the former.

I was, however, taught by my father to question everything and to research and think for myself. It is amazing what a little directed research can find..... rather than a selective "cut and paste" from your favourite tabloid .. :)

Personally I don't like the idea of the DVLA providing details to a private company, the police yes but others NO :(

ABSOLUTELY !  Most of the details are requested for "parking enforcement" by private profit making organisations. There is a simple motto these days "pay-cash-get-info". This is one reason I was pleased the identity card thing was killed off.

I was not trying to imply or infer with intent to discredit, as my wink and laughing smileys demonstrated. I was merely ribbing you for being apparently rather pro-government in your recent posts.

Incidentally, the Mail is a long way from being my favourite tabloid (in fact, I have no such favourites). Nevertheless, looking beyond the "spin" of the article, I think it is very wrong that the DVLA should be handing over information to private parking companies. I do not remember giving the DVLA any such authority, do you?   ;)

He got a hard time over his (ir)religious beliefs if I remember correctly. That, and being Scottish, finally did for him. He was quite obnoxious, actually.

My two pence on this.....i once paid the DVLA....carnt remember how much....to get the details of a car that dented my drivers door in a private car park  (caved it in)......they gave me the owners details.....and i got the door repaired.....paid by the driver that hit it....so have to say, i support they give out details...in such circumstances  :y
