Title: Had a day off today and spent the afternoon.....
Post by: Taxi_Driver on 13 May 2008, 20:00:29
Visiting a friend I havent seen for a while.

She lives on a narrow boat on a canal........

It has most of the luxeries......tv/washing machine/shower/central heating/etc

It also has a wood burning heater for the cold nights....

Was asking her how it all works........ie the power for the kit.....

She explained the central heating and hot water uses a diesel boiler.......but she has to start the diesel engine for the narrow boat for at least 2 hours a day....just ticking over to charge the batteries that runs via an invertor the TV/etc

If she wants to use the washing machine she has to start the engine anyway........

She pays currently 67ppl for her diesel.........its agg desiel........

Tho she has to move the narrowboat to fill for water every couple of weeks and also empty the chemical toilet (didnt like to ask how often she has to do that!  ;D )

An interesting and pleasant afternoon  :y

Plus Holly had fun jumping in the canal and swimming to retrieve a stick i kept throwing for her  ;D :y

My "best man" from many years back lives in a narrow boat permanently, and has done for the last 10 years - he's well happy.

One additional major expense that folks don't mention though ... every so often - I think its 5 years but could be wrong - he has to have it lifted out of the water, the bottom cleaned and some anti-barnacle paint re-applied.

This is NOT cheap as very few places have the facilities, all the boats have to be done, so there is a very strict waiting list - so supply and demand allow hte price to be set high ... :(

I must admit ..... its an idyllic life  :)

She did mention that........but i think she said longer than 5 years....10 maybe?  :-/
Think she mentioned £3k to have it done......
Also has to have an 'MOT' every now and then to check thickness of steel hull...

And i agree it 'seems' an ideal lifestyle........altho me being 6'3" i had to duck a lot below deck  ;D

Not that I would admit it in public, I have been watching 'Waterworld' and I think there is another programme of similar ilc.
Seems to me to be a wonderful and relaxed way of life, have mentioned to swmbo about going on holiday on one but she says I have to wait till my daughter is older, she is 7, full of energy and would get bored.
 ;D ;D ;D

A couple who I know permanently live on a narrowboat and say they wouldn't go back to living in a house now. My mom's brother also lives permanently on a narrowboat but don't know whether he will always do it. He likes it but not so enthusiastic as the other pair. :-/

It needed a rather big invertor to run it plus extra batts and the engine still has to run to supply the power with the batts tunnie...  :y

Does my weekend in Bruge, stopping off at hypermarket on way home count as booze cruise?

That belgium beer is dangerous - don't think we found anything below 6% except Stella Artois...
