Title: my latest edition
Post by: MV6Danny on 15 April 2013, 18:41:58
Here is a pic of my irmy mig towing my latest edition. Needs a bit of work bur just stripped and scrapped my old silver mig. Didnt manage to get the engine or box out of it which was disappointing as the engine was changed 5 years ago and was brand new when fitted and had only covered 6k when I scrapped it. Anyway let me know what you think. Its a 97 2.5td manual. I know its not going to be to everybody's liking but when I saw it I had to get it. :y

Anything out the ordinary is good in my book  :y

Is it a track car, or is it road legal ? TD being an odd choice for a track car due to the turbo lag I expect the latter  ;)

PMSL. just read the thread. seems that people dont like it. Never mind. I only wanted the spoiler but had to buy the whole car. got some plans for it. gotta be cheaper to run than my 3.0l mv6. So its going back on the road til it dies. all stickers are gonna be removed as is the shi*e interior.

Why is that then?

The combined weight of car and trailer is waaaaaaaay above the legal limit that an Omega is allowed to tow.

Using which figures Nige. Omega's gross train weight is almost 4tonnes (3960kg) so it gives you about half a tonne for the trailer ......  :-\ :-\

As above if you passed your test before 1997 & 3500kg if after 1997

According to the info I have ...

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/andrew.reynolds983/Manuals/Omega2002Manual.pdf

page 224

The kerb weight of a 3.0 MV6 is not listed .. so using the figures for a standard 3.2 elite ... and the figures of my VIN plate - which are .. spookily .. the same .. :)

Gross vehicle weight : 2200 kgs
Gross train weight : 4075

this gives a maximum "tow" weight of 4075-2200 = 1875

The subject car is a 2.5 TD -gross weight not listed but using the 2.6 as a comparison .. 2180 (ish)

so without the trailer already some 300 kgs over the top ..... now add a large and heavy twin axle  trailer.....

Remember ... Police don't care about ACTUAL weights .. they always go by PLATED weights, VOSA might do actuals, polce won't IME .. :)

Yup go with that, when I towed a certain admins dead V6 Elite back, as my 2.2 was a CD it was just under the legal weight. Think I worked it out as low spec can tow an Elite but not the other way around  ;D

Talking a few kg's here so doubt plod will notice it really.

The 3500kg is on the licence, where the gross train weight is dependant on the vehicle towing it

I only found this out recently when I looked into towing a caravan  :y

Yes, I bet they do!

I really liked the look of them in the photo's where he'd lent them against the other wheels.
Not so sure I like the colour though!

That's one original motor! ;D ;D ;D

Yep! Missed that bit ..... I was thinking kerb rather than gross weight. My gross is a little less than yours, so presumably the kerb is too, but not that much different.  :y  :y

So, you were probably legal to tow the weight license wise .. but the car wasn't weight wise !!!  :)  Still you weren't pulled so no worries ....:)

Anyone else contemplating this .. think twice ... towing massively overweight can affect many things - from structural damage to the towing vehicle, through brakes to possibly invalidating insurance.

Always will be your choice .. but think about it first .. :)

Ive towed Omegas with my Omega using an A frame and imo (legalities aside) its right on the limit of capabilities.I really wouldnt want to do it with the extra weight of a trailer added on.Its all ok while your ambling gently along on a clear road, but if anything happens which requires hard braking or a quick change of direction the towed car could very easily take control of the towing car.

Had a bit of a result today. Checked out the car and it has a genuine steinmetz kit on it. Happy days. The front bumper is damaged but should be repairable. I will have a proper look when I take it off to put the irmy bumpers on. I dont know whether to put irm side skirts on it or leave the steinmetz ones on.  ::)

Stickers are all gone now. Which has exposed rather alot of rust. Never mind a quick rub down some filler and matt black paint will sort that out. I have partly changed the interior. now have elite door cards and the cloth driver seat from my mv6. passenger seat to follow next week. Had to change the seat runner as the seat belt tensioners were different but they swapped straight over.  :y
Put steering wheel in with audio controls aswell.
Here are some before and after photos. not got any with all stickers removed will add when i have taken them.
