Ok, on today's travels .......
Tesco Nottingham - Diesel 143.9p per litre
Tesco Stafford - Diesel 138.9p per litre
Now unless they lowered the price within the hour or so it took me to do the journey then why would there be that difference between two outlets of the same company?
-
The normal excuse is, its the delivery cost from where they get it from :y
Don't know if any Tesco fuel is franchised, like other garages, which would make a difference :y
-
Tesco are not cheap for petrol......quite the opposite in fact. :-\
-
I paid £1.35.9p at my local Jet station yesterday.
-
Petrol stations usually set their prices according to the petrol stations' prices within a couple of miles don't they? May explain the difference :-\
-
Where I work in Warrington there's 2 Tescos within about 1/3 of a mile of each other. Tesco Extra £1.40 for Derv the other an Express £1.38 ??? ::) ::) ::) They're always a couple of pence + or - of each other & I can never understand it?
-
Some will lower their prices as a "loss leader" to get you to go there for the fuel, knowing a large percentage will also then shop whilst there.......
called marketing .... :)
-
Doesnt seem to be working though as they announced a 51% drop in profits yesterday. Although that must be due at least in part to the catastrophic failure of their attempt at breaking into the incredibly comptetitive U.S. market, which they have now abandoned.

Well, that system does not seem to operate around here....and I notice it more when we go to the pikey van in Wareham (Dorset) There are huge differences between garages 'just round the corner'. Worst ones I saw when last down there were Texaco stations.
I always thought Esso garages were dear, but the one at Hazlemere always seems to be 1p cheaper than the Shell garage opposite. In fact, there is one Esso garage on the A31 near Wimborne which always seems to be about 5p per litre cheaper than anywhere else.

A lot of Tesco's do a cartel with local established Petrol Stations in order to overcome perceeved planing issues for there new stores, for example when a brand new Superstore went up in our village, Tescos pledged not to undercut the local BP garage 100m away, needless to say both are quiet expensive and the same price.
-
Im pretty sure thats illegal, although I dont suppose thy are too worried about such trivialities.
Ime U.S. consumers are muh more savvy and have no loyalty whatsoever to any particular retailer, which may be why Tesco have died on their arse when trying to break into the U.S. market.
-
Tesco have only ever claimed that they will try to be competitive locally. Hence the Tescos here is bloody expensive, as the only other station within 10 miles is the local BP.
-
I keep an eye on fuel prices both in Spain and in Britain. They increase as quickly here but come down much faster than in Britain.
I used to like the fact that fuel was the same price everywhere in Spain including motorways. Not any more. Our local town has diesel today at 1.35 a litre at both garages and the next town only eight miles away has a cut price(1.24) operator card sales only, no assistant and we save £6 a tank by going there. The other two garages (one is BP) in the town are nearly as cheap.

Tesco tried to set up "Metro" style walk-in stores in California, Nevada, Arizona, etc. Analyst on the radio today said it's well known that, especially in those states, nobody walks, and nobody "pops out for a pint of milk" either. ;D They drive to a Wall Mart/etc. once a month and fill a large SUV with food. ;D

Tescos Kettering - £1.329

I went to Tescos yesterday bought diesel at £142.9, went round the corner and the local Esso was £140.9..... :(
-
130.9p for diesel here! :o

Tesco admitted in a BBC TV interview when asked why Tesco Sandhurst was the most expensive outlet for their fuel in the UK. Their answer: It depends upon how many local filling stations they have wiped out the competition in the area. If there still is local competition they they will price their fuel competitively. If there is now little competition, like where I live, they will price as high as they can get away with, was the essence of their answer. >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(
This is why I always use the local Shell garage in Sandhurst as it is the nearest left in their catchment area. Use it or lose it. :y
Remember: Every little local monopoly helps their shareholders.

I filled up at Tesco Stockton £1:38.9 at Lunch Time, on the news at Tea Time it was announced that all the big supermarkets were going to drop their prices by 2ppl typical.......... ::) ::) ::)
-
I used to serve petrol at a small garage (in the late 1970s) where the garage owner would calculate the price each time a new tanker load was delivered.
He would then have to wait until we shut (at 7pm) before sending someone up a ladder to change the prices on the sign board and go round the pumps to change the prices.
I suspect that a lot of independent garages only change the price when they get the invoice for a new delivery.
-
I use the internet for weekly updates in my area.....(.petrol prices .com ) and i put in my post code and then every week they send me local petrol prices for my area.So i dont have to get off my backside to find out.....simples as the man said. :D :D :y :y :

Tesco price at the local area price, tesco normal unleaded is ruggish omegas run like bag a nails on the stuff as it contains a lot of bio-additives to make it cheaper so they make more profit, its basically watered, down to the limit to scrape thro the BS standard, but the 99 stuff is good.
Tesco not always cheapest for fuel,in huntingdon the shell garage is normally a penny cheaper, unless tesco are doing the 5p off lark.
-
In Lincoln this morning Diesel was 136.9 ppl ............
-
Crude oil dropped by just over $10 last week so pump prices should eventually dip a bit... :-\
-
Seems to me to get cheap fuel in an area there needs to be an asda or Morrisons as there fuel seems to be the cheapest.
-
As a retired driver i find a price drop of a couple of pence per litre doesn,t make much difference.
But i do feel for folks who rely on fuel for their living. :(
