Title: Project "No Fear" - Cylinder Head Refurb Progress"
Post by: JamesV6CDX on 14 May 2008, 01:05:38
Well I've made some progress with the cylinder head.

Here is how it looked before:

And here is how it looks after a skim. Note the edges of the valves - the machine shop have taken it down very close, but should be good for LPG / High octane fuel.

Looking good for the skim, but still needs some more work. It's filthy still inside, and there are bits of swarf around.

So I'm taking out the valves, cleaning it all out, and replacing the stem seals.

Didn't have much else to do tonight, so out comes the Valve spring compressor ;D

After swearing at the pesky collets, Here is the head now I've removed the valves:

And... here are the valves after a QUICK clean. Note they are kept in order by being pushed through some labelled card.

All that's left to do, is get everything cleaned up, and also clean the manifold mating faces.

Then I can set to work on cleaning the valves/stems further, and grinding the valves into their seats.

Then, refit the ancilliaries to the head, eg DIS, Thermostat etc - and pop it on the car!

Can't guarantee it and it's dependant on weather, but I hope to have her running nicely this weekend.

It will be a transformed engine when I've finished with it  :)

Btw - budget for fixing this project is a strict £100 - and I'm currently well within budget  8-)

Blimey, that is a lot removed, did he give you a figure as to how much?

Personally I would of got it skimmed after the full strip and clean.

Personally I would of got it skimmed after the full strip and clean.

Reason for not doing this, is because he gets swarf EVERYWHERE(!) so i wanted to strip and clean it after the event!

Having done a few on various cars I agree.  Its a pain to remove and leaving the valves in prevents too much crap getting everywhere  :y

Thought you were going to clean it.....the combustion chambers look filthy (note, paint stripper  :y!)

I note some corrosion around one of the water ways.

As for the skim when stripped and cleaned, I always give a further thorough wash down after the skim and full blow through with the air line. My thoughts are that if any swarf etc gets near the valve assemblies/follower bores/valve springs then its easy to get rid off where as you risk scouring these areas when removing the valve springs otherwise.

each to thier own I guess  :y

The chambers are as clean as I can get them  :'( but I'll have another go.

I don't really have a preference on when to skim - I mainly had it done so quick because that's when he could fit me in.

I'm not forgetting it's a £100 stopgap car so I'm not going to go to enormous time or expense on it :y

Could always chuck it in Maria's dishwasher. She won't be so annoyed about the beach towel after that. ;)
