Title: Zafira B diesel starting trouble
Post by: philsteward on 24 April 2013, 23:13:37
I have a Zafira B which has trouble starting. Doesn't matter whether it is warm or cold.

The car with the spanner is on, and it seems unhappy with the cam & crank positions.  Car has had a new under bonnet fuse box as the old one got wet and corroded, a new ECU as the old one was giving spurious voltage figures for the cam and crank sensors and of course new cam and crank sensors as well. The timing belt has been changed and timing checked as well as an oil and filter change.

Totally running out of ideas now, anyone got any suggestions?

you need to get fault codes ...... pretty sure you can do the pedal trick on your car - the code appears on the odometer

Phil, how fast is it cranking over?

As fast as normal?!  It sounds fine, not too slow (failed battery) and not too quick/quiet (like it has lost compression).  A neighbour has exactly the same car and it sounds just the same as that.

secondary fuel pump?

What/where is that?  Once the car is running it is absolutely fine, no loss of power, no unusual noises, no smoking etc

Right then codes are:
34029
38008

That's it. EML is not on but car with spanner light is. When I went today I managed to start it first time, cranked for about 3 secs then slowly started with the help of my foot on gas pedal. Left it running for about 5mins, turned it off for a minute and it started after about 2 secs of cranking with no help from the pedal.

Thoughts appreciated!

Read them using the pedal trick, so the numbers you are referring to would be:

P0340 & P0380

Hope that makes sense?

Already had a new (genuine) cam sensor & crank sensor.  Not sure if it is glow plug or relay related as appears to make no difference if the vehicle is hot.  Will check them out though.
