What should I expect to pay to have a V6 Cat Back Exhaust system replaced, Labour and minor Consumables. ie I give them the Car and Cat Back System, they remove old system and replace.
Been to a few Exhaust places locally and they dont seem to be interested unless they supply the new Exhaust System (and there's me thinking there's a recession on) so going to hit a few Garages to have the work done.

With our sadly now sick 3.0 Elite Estate, I could not get home, weather was shite, too bloody cold, so we gave it to garage in town. (at my parents in Northants)
Charged us £40, I supplied the Eternal exhaust :y

I would say thats reasonable Tunnie, guessing what, 1 hour for them?, was that the whole system off and back on again?

Yes, although they did mention slight damage in transit on the exhaust, he had to make an adjustment apparently. Done a few months ago, appears fine although slight blow I think on cat join. Plan was to reseal it again, but not sure if that will be needed now ::)

They probably rely on selling the exhaust to meet their profit targets :-\.
Omega exhaust is incredibly easy to replace IF
- you have a 2/4 post lift
- the bolts come out of the cats (or they have been drilled out)
Apart from the clamp between the two pipes all the other supports are rubber doughnuts that just push on to the hangers.
Any business is only as good as the people working there. I have had good experiences with tyre & exhaust fitters (until the staff changed). You might get a better service by using a mobile mechanic.

Thanks, yep If I could get it off the ground enough I would go it myself, despite not being keen on working under Cars.

Just had a call back with a quote, 100 plus vat, said they will need it most of the day for next week as its a "Pig of job on them, mate".

I replaced mine 2 years ago with the car stood on ramps. Perfectly doable without a 4 poster. Would have been quicker if I had chosen not to recover the thread on the one cat bolt that sheared (I got the other 3 out OK).

It's not a hard job infact hardest part is removing the bolts intact from the cat section but that should be easy for a garage with a ramp and oxy acetylene ;)

Oxy acetylene is not essential. I bought a Rothenberger Super Fire 2 MAPP torch a few years ago. Cost me £62, and cans of MAPP gas are about £10. This is hot enough to heat the downpipe end flange to red heat. I changed my exhaust last weekend. I heated the threaded flange to red heat, popped inside for a cup of coffee, sprayed the cooling flange with WD40, and (gently) unscrewed the screws. Makes the whole job easy.
That torch was money well spent.

Thats ideal if you will use it a lot but its probably cheaper to pay a garage to replace the exhaust

A load of 13ollocks ...... .the hard part is trying to remove the 2 bolts from each down pipe, but even if/when they shear, drill them through & use a nut & bolt - easy! The rest of it is just hanging the sections from the rubber hangers, lining each section up & bolting up the U clamps. Easy fro someone with a 2/4 post lift.

Ive done it a few times and imo it is a bit of a pig,if your lying on the drive with the front on ramps and very little clearance.
Doing it on a proper lift would be pretty easy though.

did we not meet before on the Yahoo Senator site? Senators were better in that the down pipes to cats and cats to middle sections were always joined by nuts and bolts, so if they broke off it did not matter.
I have found drilling out the broken bits of bolt tricky. They seem fairly hard, nearly as hard as my drill bits, and if the drill bit breaks off in the bolt I have a real problem. Is there any particular technique of drilling through the bolt?

Good quality sharp drill bits and a slow drill speed so they dont get too hot and lose their strength ime. Kills the arms though if you dont have much space to work in. ;)

Hi guys,
As we're on the subject of exhaust removals is it worth trying penetrating oil/fat wrench (or flare wrench even) first if they're rusty or just getting straight on with the heat?

Want to bring it over here? If I can get it on the lift it'll be easy, if not there's a pit and if all else fails I have done it on ramps :y

Thanks for the advice and comments and thanks Swordfish and Guffer for your offer of help :y, unfortunately the cars been parked up for a few weeks and Ive unknowingly let the the MOT expire so its currently sitting on a 'Failed Emissions Cert' since last week and kind of narrows my options a bit and hence why it needs to be local

Cutting a slot in the flange helps with bolt removal and all you need then is a nut and bolt to replace :y

As Albitz says, use a decent drill & a steady hand with a reasonably powerful drill & take your time. You're right, you don't want to have the task of removing the broken drill from the down pipe. :y :y

great to meet you again in cyberspace! I still miss my Senators, did my most memorable journeys in them, cruising all over Europe at speeds (up to 150mph) that were beyond dreams in my childhood. In the Haynes museum there are Jaguars, Rolls Royces, Bentleys, Duesenbergs, etc, that in my childhood I drooled over. My father bought his first car, a pre-war Morris 8, in 1951, and I thought it was great. It failed to climb the hill from Wookey Hole to Cheddar it was so under powered and lacked a fourth gear. I never dreamed then that one day I should own a vehicle that could cruise all day in the 140s. My last great run was from Hamburg to Le Havre in six hours. Happy Days! And all done in a Vauxhall Senator 24v.

by a slot in the flange do you mean a saw cut radial to the screw hole?

I changed my system on my own just using two axle stands - took just over an hour because I had to drill one of the bolts out. I wish I'd sprayed the bolts a couple of days before with some penetrating spray or something.
You only really need to get the front up for the bolts into the cats I found.

its a hour job it easy
i need one fast for mot back box two mids and pipes dont take any tim,e and need a mot book in garage iv used many times but was new manger there
i supply system not them they just were to fit
billy bob bullshit ring me up tells me its fail mot on emitions and need x amout of hours lab to have injector rails off
and they had job getting exsurst off
total charged was neally 500
i was in right rush eed to get to essex from luton and was really busy so it dint register strait away
later i clicked they use some oter garage for mot test
checked time and he had rang me after it passes
checked car over dust was still on rail penlum ect no one been any where near it
when to garage looking for manager some of must have rang him he woud come to work
i kicked off mega style to area manger i was coming to collect cash one way or another
and check posted throw door with in a hour for it all minus 1 hour labor and mot
contacted trading standards told them i had disputable proff mot garaged times on vosa system phone logs and recorded call of bull shit
cast iron case gas what there were not one bit intrested

My local tyre place fitted my current exhaust for about £40. Worst case, cut and drill cat to mid pipe bolts. Then if it needs to come off again, it is always nice and easy nuts and bolts :y
