Hi guys,
Firstly the jack... I got my new axle stands today... the 6 tonne pair from Machinemart.... in my stupidity I wasn't anticipating them to be the size they are :o :o :o they're feking massive. at the minimum height theyre 40cm lol
So i'm definitely going to have to get a new jack that can jack up the car high enough so I can use my new stands. was looking at this...
http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/ctj3000g-3-tonne-professional-garage-j#reviews
decent price, goes to max height (520mm). i'd like it to be one of those jacks that's easy... you know what I mean... not much effort to get it up high. sadly my Costco card expired so I cant get one from there ::) i'm also not in a position to spend billions :'(
secondly I want a decent set of flare wrenches. I want to have these on hand for when I do exhaust work cos theyre so fat and have the 4/5 points and will really help in not stripping stuff. again would like a decent set with decent length but again not a billionaire. anyone got any recs?
cheers guys :y

I find those machine mart stands dig in, one I bought from Costco is better I think.
Mine is an Arcan one, find a UK seller of these:

I have the Clarke jack. Its no good for lowered cars. I also can't seem to lower it when loaded in slow, controlled manner. It does lift the car effortlessly thought.
I would return those axle stands you bought, and buy the ones I recommended in the other thread (no offence) ;)

I use this (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Arcan-2-Ton-Heavy-Duty-Quicklift-Aluminium-Lightweight-Car-Trolley-Jack-NEW-/271190033459?pt=UK_Lifting_Moving_Equipment&hash=item3f242f8433) one. It's easy to use, lighter than most of it's size, lifts to full extension in 3 pumps and will usually go under a lowered car.
I'm pretty sure they can be got cheaper at costco.

Thanks guys.
Thanks for the advice SMD but i'll be honest... those stands fill me with maximum confidence. Theyre sooo sturdy looking.
I also found this set of flares...

I keep looking at that one myself. Trouble is, my Merc is 2300kg, although I don't intend lift it all up in the air in one go (or very often ::) )

You're going to be disappointed with flare wrenches if that's what you are going to be using them for. They're meant for soft, easily damaged, low torque fasteners like brake pipe fittings. So that you might be able to use the fittings again. For things like exhaust work, where the nuts are worn/damaged/rusted/heated you want good strong, heavy duty 6 point sockets or ring spanners. And even then, you're going to be using new nuts/bolts even if they undo.
There is a damn good reason that exhaust fitters use oxy-acetylene as their primary tool.

I've got two of the 2 tonne jacks can't remember where I got them may have been Machine Mart's 2 tonners http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/clarke-2-tonne-diy-trolley-jack-ctj2b (http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/clarke-2-tonne-diy-trolley-jack-ctj2b) but I think it was a Lidl special bargain which is partly why I got two. Now about £22, I can't fault them, do you really need a 3 tonner (my entire Elite only weighs about 1.6 tonne)?

This isn't a bad deal Webby :y

Thanks for all the advice. yeah I think I got the wrong use for the flare wrenches..... a good set of 6 point impact sockets instead for the suspension stuff.
I think im going to hold out for this week as I still cant decide.
that sealey one looks good especially for the price. anyone had any experience of those?
-
i have the 3t machine mart jack and its ace
the advantage of this over a 2t is that its much more stable its also very heavy
-
the 6 tonne pair from Machinemart....
Are you going to start servicing trucks? :o ;)
-
R1, is it the Clarke one in the initial post you have???
:)
LOL no aaron, just wanted some extra confidence and security ;)

Webby, if it's any consolation, I bought a pair of the 6 tonne stands from MM too. They were bigger than I'd expected too. ;D ;D

lol theyre massive aint they. just really wanted to make sure the jack I posted will actually get it high enough ::)
-
Right guys, thanks for all the input.
Can't find an Arcan for a decent price. I also liked the look of the Sealey one that someone else posted so looked in to sealey stuff a bit further.
The one in the pic looked a bit too much like mine and not being awkward but I don't like having a small lever..... really wanted to pay the bit extra and get one that will lift a billion tonnes with ease :D ;D
Anyway...I think i'm set on either the original one in my post or this one from Sealey....

Thoughts? :y
ps sorry this is going round and round but I really don't want to have to buy a jack 'n' stands again so I wanna get it right first time :y
