My contract with O2 expires tomorrow and I have a new sim arriving from T-Mobile. I know you get nothing free in this world, and if something appears free - there is usually a catch. I've tried ;D
So can someone recommend somewhere to unlock my Desire S (as cheap as possible, obviously)
Thanks

ebay is best option, usually takes a couple of hours for them to get unlock code :y
-
Have you asked O2?
-
No, havent asked O2. Account is in the missus' name but getting her to call them is not easy :(
-
Usually O2 phones are already unlocked :y
-
really? will try now ???

Nope, not this one :(

Unusual, was on O2 as private customer for years, all of my contract handsets were unlocked. That said was about 2008 since I had one, must have changed their policy :'(

Mrs E's 02 PAYG is unlocked as standard ... I've used a giffgaff and a vodafone sim it in on a couple of occasions .. :) but it is quite old now ....
-
We bought a Blackberry on PAYG with O2 recently and that was locked too. So maybe it depends who you buy from?
-
I popped into a phone shop and they did one for me - cost £10 and took a couple of days.
-
Go to a local independent phone shop, usually charge about £15, to unlock handsets.
phone companys lock handsets to there network to stop people, getting the newest handsets on the cheapest deals and then selling them and keeping there old handset.

Yep, As long as your Contract period is past its sell by date and and all paid for, most Nextworks will send you the unlock code for free. :y
-
slightly off topic but blackberry unlock codes are free with 24 hour wait online - just google them
don't think that HTC are for that phone

I phoned O2 at the end of my contract last year and asked them for the code for my Nokia and they emailed it over. No charge.
-
Thanks for all replies. Phone O2 yesterday, they agreed to send me the unlock code for free. :y

Traditionally, O2 contract phones were unlocked, and PAYG were locked.
However, most O2 supplied smartphones are now locked.
SMD - O2 normally give a free unlock on their contract phones, as you found out :)

sorry to divert the the thread somewhat, but does anybody know whether iphones locked to orange payg can be unlocked the same way, or whether they can be unlocked without the codes ?

You can jailbreak it, but the service provider lock will return the next time you reboot the phone.
The only proper way to unlock will be to get an unlock code from Orange/EE.

Apple phones are a bit different.
Martian is partially right, jailbreaking can allow semi permement unlocks on *some* older devices, until the phone is updated or the jailbreak removed. During the update, Apple normally block further unlocks. Also, jailbreaking removes a critical security layer around the device, so if you intend to jailbreak, understand exactly what you are doing.
The only viable way is for an official unlock. You have to get the current provider to ask Apple to unlock it, then connect the phone to iTunes. Most providers charge around £20 for this.

many thanks guys for the as usual excellent advice !
