Title: door hinge/pins issue
Post by: mcd840 on 17 May 2013, 23:39:39
about 3 weeks ago i renewed my drivers door hinge pins on my vec b however the door still drops a fair bit when opened, this doesnt bother me as i know its not going to fall of but as theres so much play in the door it knocks whilst driving which is enough to piss you off, im wondering if vx are giving me the correct size pins, are the pins for the vec b, astra g, cars from that era the same size pins or are the vec b ones a slightly different size? or is the wear actaully in the door hinges itself and not the pins? when i get a hold of the door and move it up and down there is play in both the top and bottom hinges. this must be about the third set of new pins in my two years of ownership, the knocking from the door gets solved for abit but eventually comes back.
anyone else had this?
cheers

I'd suspect that your hinges are worn. Your option now is to ream out the holes to an over sized pin .... pretty sure standard pins are 8mm. The hard part is to make sure you ream out the holes concentric to the original holes which isn't easy ..... a bloke on the ABS forum has just had the same problem and didn't line them up properly - it's not easy.

That sounds like a bit of a nightmare  :-\
I know nothing about this, but would it be possible to take a mould of the hinge and have a new pin machined to suit?
Or would there be too many variables in the shape of the hinge?

You would probably find that the body mounted part of hinge has worn differently to the part bolted to door.
Line reaming all of it seems best unless you get new hinges and pins. Best of luck. :-\

from what i can feel its just the brackets on the door that are worn, the brackets on the inner wing are solid, whats involved in replacing the 2 brackets on the door?

cheers
