Title: Omega surprises
Post by: theolodian on 07 November 2006, 20:47:42
OK, what features or quirks have people noticed on the Omega that are not usual for other cars?  I am not talking, ahem, about problems or maintenance issues.  Just normal use stuff.  :)

For me the surprises were;

-Blinking fuel warning light when really low
-Cruise remembers speed after car turned off

Something I haven't figured out is a random ding from the sat-nav speaker when it is off?

Not noticed or paid attention really, but you have a posh one e.g., SAT-NAV, DO U WANT TO SWAP ;D

Theolodian's has the older Carin Satnav. Bit dated now...  ...get a modern satnav instead.

Turns off internal sensors so wind won't set off alarm if you leave windows cracked.  Strange symbol for it though  :-?

Also lets you leave pets or pesky kids in the car when you lock it :)

its a small effect but did't notice it on my dads, when you unlock it at night using the remote, the lights inside the car gradually fade up. and down after you lock it.

Not the harsh off / on by some cars, by a nice "soft" change if you get what i mean.

Nice simple effect, which looks nice.

Mustn’t forget the annoying but thankfully short-lived feature on early facelifts (2000/2001) that requires the key to be removed from the ignition in order to open the boot.

Directional mini-projector map lights on the pre-facelift (sadly withdrawn from the facelift - replaced with non-adjustable ones)

Forward-folding passenger seat – an ingenious and useful feature, which I enjoyed on the previous Omega but sadly lost when I changed my car to one with cow.

Or the thing that supplies lots of leather for your meega, hence no fold flat front seat ::)

Leather? Er.. no. What I was saying is that when I have a cow in the front passenger seat it won’t fold forward… you can try it yourself.

My MV6 doesn't have it and I thought it was because of the sports seats, but I find SWMBO's Elite doesn't have it and that's got cloth!!

I thiunk it'd a really good idea too and both mine are sadly lacking!!

I love it when my meega becomes playful, like when its absolutly persisting down and you've got no coat on so you run to the car pressing the remote as you run, you see the indicators flash and the little button on the door lift, you try to open the door but it wont open you have to open the rear door and lift the drivers side button a fraction to open the door. It will work fine them until the next torrential downpour :'(

No no.......don't worry, it's a hand car wash and valet service that I use sometimes. Full hand car wash, leather and wax, interior windows cleaned, interior vacuumed, upholstery cleaned, dashboard cleaned, tyre walls and exterior trim blacked - all for just under 20 quid. :y 8-)

Just leave work half an hour or 45 mins early and tell the boss you are going home to wash your car. He, of course will be outraged and dock your pay. But if you stay, the money you earn will be spent on a car wash. So, go home, do it yourself and you will end up quits but home a bit earlier :y

I love the way my (older Carin) sat-nav will always only give you the option of STAND BY when you particularly want to get somewhere!!
PS which fuse feeds it? It might respond to the power supply being pulled  >:(

Had Vx's for 10 years ish. All have had the flashing light on the fuel guage when on vapour. The newer ones I had as hire cars also remembered the speed previously used on cruise controll, get into third and hit the button wooooooooooosssssssssshhhhhhhh :).

I have a 2001 facelift and dont have to remove the key from the ignition to open the boot, just hold button down for a few seconds. The fading interior light is also good. Apart from all the above mine is normal (no cruise yet though).

When you got your firt Vx how long did it take you to work out how to turn on the interior light?

The fact that you can turn on the interior light by pulling the headlamp switch, electric windows remain on after switching the ignition off (if you do not open the door), low drag coefficient, etc etc

Why do cars set their own clocks over here but not mobiles?  Very strange.

Yep - strange - I had a mobile that would set to the local time every time I took it to the states, but not whenI got back home.  So it is not (in all cases)  the phone, but the signals that are transmitted by the networks.  As for the radio using the RDS time, you have to tell it to do it (I think) - ther are instructions in the handbook.

Yeah, it's the network - not the phones.  They can be set to auto update the time, but doesn't do any good over here.  My car is set to do the RDS time.  Good thing too, b/c I'd have no idea how to set it otherwise.

The windows staying powered up until you exit the car slipped my mind! That's my favourite. The number of times I have to get back into an unfamiliar car and put the key back in the ignition because I'd forgotten to put the window up before removing the ignition key's astronomical.

My least favourite feature is not being able to disable the interior courtesy light!

Only on newer ones (computer display lines above Radio line). Older ones, Radio line above computer lines, do not have this capability...

Haa, but the other week!
Mine sync'd to GMT from the local radio station then I'd switched to classic - clock still correct for the new GMT; later came to returned home - clock wrong by 58 minutes!  Classic rds clock was in error (reckon they'd hit the -1 minute button instead (twice) - new feature, if the rds has syn'd it doesn't re-sync to a new (bbc) station unless the radio is switched off first (well, b*gger me I thought).  Now you know I couldn't have made that up.

But best of all (I just lurve that song), I love the way that orange light glows when you press the loud pedal to quickly in the wet ...

- now that I don't see on other cars (I get to drive).

I like the total closure idea, its far quicker to close windows and roof manually but doing it by slowly remote appeals to my Engineering humour.

I thought that the windows staying powered after you turn off the car, and being able to close them with the remote was a standard German thing.  VW's do it.

I prefered the old Senator/Carlton (& MkIII Granny) method whereby opening the driver's door powered up the windows - strange that this didn't apply to the roof.

The Omega's is somewhat better than the Senator's though. I've lost count the number of times I flattened my Senator battery when working with the driver's door open with all 7 courtesy lights on! At least the Omega just puts on the puddle light of the door that's open and the repective interior light.

Phew! I found a plus point for an Omega!!  ;D

Having to put the the key back also happens to me when I drive uncomfortable company cars (which are VW Golfs mainly).  Bloody annoying when you are used to better things!!

Opening the drivers door on my Cavalier CDX powers up the window circuits which I must say is a better arrangement, it is especially useful when cleaning the car as you can lower the widows slightly in order to clean the very top of the window.  Don't know why it does not apply to the roof - perhaps it is because the electrical current draw is too great??
