Title: Door removal advice please
Post by: Big_Al on 04 June 2013, 21:11:47
hi guys,
been having a search but can't really find a detailed explanation /photo set of how best to remove front & rear doors.

after 6 months of searching I have now found a pair of doors in the correct colour  8) 8)

Going to collect & remove them on Saturday

both front & rear have electric windows ,so can anyone give me a simple removal procedure.

As in . . . which order to take what off & where electrics  disconnect  etc.            Front or rear first ?

Both doors will be fully complete apart from driving  mirror on the front one .

Do the door pins just knock out ?  or is there a special tool that goes with the big 'ammer ! ;D ;D

any advice or links will be appriciated . . TIA     Al :y

If like for like its quite straightforward. But two people is advisable. One to hold the door while to tother knocks pounding and out.

Pin removal depends what you have to hand. The flair on the top of the roll pun is all you have to lever, knock or pry it out.

There is a knack to the electrical connector though, that I don't posses.  :(

Chris ,  would you know if the rubber shrouded loom will  be left hanging from the door   or be left hanging from the pillar  (if that makes sense)

in other words do they disconnect in the door or in the pillar  :-\ :-\

collecting the doors in the Transit  .  .so have not got to change them there & then . bringing them home to do that  :D :D :D

there are dedicated hinge pin removal sets that go down the middle of the roll pin/hinge pin or I made this from silver steel (high carbon steel) to knock the pin out using the flare. Others here have just gripped the pin with Mole-Grips & hit the grips with a hammer. Pins come out towards the middle ie top pin goes down, bottom pin goes up.

Any electrical harm to be done if I disconnect the ones on my car as a bit of practice?  so That I know how the connectors come apart when i get to take the new doors off .  :-\ :-\ :-\

My car is parked on the drive & won't be going anywhere until the new bits are fitted  ;)

Easiest way for the rear doors: pull out rubber grommet at base of pillar & disconnect plug, unbolt doorstay at pillar, with front door open close rear door, drift pins out, release door handle and lift clear.
Front doors: Ideally another helper (not essential as you can rest lock end of door on your thigh.). Open door, unbolt doorstay, pair of plumbers grips on round multi-connector & twist to release, knock pins out. As said, a helper to assist with weight or use your thigh.

No harm done practising on your own multi-plugs :y

Just make sure your ignition is off if you have side airbags ...... there's a (pressure?) switch in the bottom of the door, otherwise you'll put the airbag light on & you'll need a reader to turn it back off again.

Obviously pins don`t need to be drifted out fully, just enough to release door hinge. Might be a good idea to tap the pins down/up on the flared end to free them off a bit

and hinge pins are only pennies so replace if any wear on them.  :y

I kept a set of PFL gold doors for spares when I scrapped the car. No trouble getting them off, wife helped. I think the plug/socket is buried in the door. I made the mistake of lowering the windows before I removed them. Now I cannot get at the locks and door motors as spares because the window is in the way.

I still have the doors if anyone is interested.

A pair of long mole moles grips makes life easier.Attach them as tight as you can to the door pin and then whack it a few times with a hammer, job done.I removed replaced one recently in less than half an hour. :y

he means that you have a 'new-to-you' door that has a plug dangling at the front of it. Does that give you an indication of how the plug/socket on your old door come apart? ;)

Turn black ribbed connector anti clockwise

So ...... I've often wondered what the red bit is for.

(I'd not even got the right connector in my head .... I was thinking of the rectangular plug/socket of the Senator.  ::) )

Ah !    . . Still got to get the new ones off the donor car  first though before I can actually  see that situation. The plugs won't be dangling until I disconnect them  ???

Think I'm ok now though thanks to Robs pics  . .  .  cheers Rob  :y :y

Rear wiring was easy  . .sussed that . But will fiddle around with the front door wiring connector on the original  paint scuffed  door thats gonna be chucked . that way ,when I get to the donor car I should know how it all comes apart  ::) ::) ::) ::)

All done 2 replacement doors & a wing . Suprisingly quick job thanks to the advice & info from certain oofers :y :y

Back door went straight on  . .no adjustments needed .

Front door very slight adjustment to the lock keep on the pillar. Wiring loom connector was a bit fiddly to reconnect. :-\ :-\

Wing unbolt  & replace  . .then re bolt up  :y

Full spring clean of complete car in & out is next job .  but not today  . .  .next weekend I  reckon ;) ;)
