Are they plug and play or do you need to format anything? the daughters lappy has got a "hard disc error" message on screen, I've made the fatal mistake of taking it to the muppets in PC world where they gave me the usual spiel about send it off- £50 now and diagnose fault, cost of this and that , I can imagine it mounting up nicely. Is it a hard job changing a drive?

Not plug and play, need formatting. You have that option in the Windows install - assuming you'll be installing Windoz ;)

As its a laptop, its likely its the system drive as dbug implies. That means it needs Windows reinstall.
The fact you are asking this Q answers one of dbug's implications, as its fair to say that "alternatives to Windows" are probably unsuitable.

You can buy a replacement HDD for the laptop for the £50, depending on what has caused the failure its unplug and put new one in, then install windows.
If you were down my neck of the woods I would happily sort it for you, if you know someone who has a bit of PC knowledge then its and easy repair :)

I had what I thought was HD failure, even the IT guy from work could not fix it, ended up with a new lap top...... ::) ::)
