Title: Jokes - Again
Post by: JamesV6CDX on 11 May 2008, 23:14:42
I'm aware this has been discussed before.

Every time I log onto general chat regularly I have to filter through a whole series of jokes before I can find any other posts.

While I'm not against jokes, I feel it is getting a little out of hand, and is personally making me avoid finding threads that I may otherwise find interesting and contribute to.

I am also against loads of stickies, but in comparison it would be better to have one dedicated thread for funnies.

As it stands, I am reading chat less and less for this reason.

Not asking directly for anything to be done, just making feelings known :y

Simple solution...

If it says 'joke', or 'funny', or similar or perhaps has a smiley face to the left side, simply do not waste the effort of opening and reading.....

Reduces the likelyhood of opening something that you don't want to read...

Point taken :)

But - we have a Sticky legal questions thread, that goes for weeks without a post. But jokes get posted several times daily.

I understand legal questions, when arise, are more pressing to people - but I do just wonder if all the jokes could be contained somewhere dedicated (maybe in future releases?)

Fair play....

The legal bit has some interesting ( and crap) bits of info that some folks are happy to wade backwards through.  Dunno if anyone would want to wade backwards through a shed load of old jokes and comments....

At present, if a joke appears and its a duffer, it soon dissappears into obscurity.  Wouldn't have the same if it was a sticky style thread.

My vote goes to individual jokes who will have (or not have) their 30 seconds of fame before crashing and burning....

Sounds logical :)

maybe if you do want to post a joke, mention in the title of the thread that it is a joke or have a laughing smiley next to it :y
Just an idea :y

Most people do actually put "Joke" though   :-?

Can't see a problem myself, if they are in the General Chat Area....

Other than they fill up half the page and you have to sift through them to find car relevent threads - the reason I personally come here :)

Not against jokes one bit - just think they could be cordoned off somewhere!

I go into GENERAL chat to chat about GENERAL things --- most car related topics have their own sections.
Have no problem with jokes -- have posted a few myself, bit of light relief.
Agreed, maybe the word Joke in the title would help others to avoid these posts if so inclined.

Totally agree, general chat covers everything else, jokes included.

As HC says all the main car related stuff is in Named sections.

Would I be better off posting pics of my car rebuilds and what not in general help - even though I'm not directly requesting help, I guess it's more relevent than "general" chat?

No, keep them in gen chat.  Whilst interesting and useful, and car related, its not 'help' material if that makes sense :y

If people made titles more meaningful, things would be better  >:(

Careful now ... do I see "Common Sense and Logic" creeping in ???

So, the gist of your first post is that you don't like to wade through jokes to read the car related posts that interest you -- by inference I read that all posts in general chat should be car related, so that no-one is hampered by irrelevant posts ---- or have I got the wrong end of the stick.
If it helps, I, for one will refrain from posting jokes.

I think some people need to chill out a bit..... or get a sense of humour..
If there is a problem with jokes been on the forum you need to get a life....... (as long as they are not to over the top)
If you can put "Joke" in the title so people that dont want to read them dont have too, great...

I feel that the jokes do detract from the content slightly, but I do not see another solution to them. As H21 says if they are crap (quite a few) then they will disappear.

I agree with point made about having more meaningful titles to posts - this can be frustrating when you see "help" or "problem" what bloody use is that to man or beast?

Just my opinion  :y

If someone has a Problem or needs Help, then surely the Place to put these subjets are in the Help Section??

Not sure it's the area that is in question mate. Moreso the titles of the post.

Eg - "help" in a post title, won't attract any specific experts, such as "cambelt problem" might...

Agree, I've mentioned it before. So much easier if the basic issue is in the title.

Apologies, I was slipping away from the track of the thread. I probably didnt use the best examples from ones I have seen in the "general chat" area  :-[

I didn`t realise that a 'laugh and a joke' in the general chat area bothered people quite so much. :-?

Perhaps a compromise might be made; `only jokes about cars, perhaps? ;D

I have no problem with the jokes .. I enjoy them, as do many others judging by the responses ....

I appreciate others may not, so I agree that correct "labelling" would be a good idea .. then those that don't wish to read can pass by. Just as I pass by the (admittedly infrequent) motorbike stuff.

With the large numbers of members - and still growing  :y :y :y - it is obvious that not everyone wants the same from the forums.

IMHO the Admin staff have the balance just about right, the vast majority of sub-forums are Omega related, with just one for "anything goes" (within reason).

I personally love this site because it is well categorized and comprehensive in it's chat, including the jokes! :y :y

Providing all comment is under the correct heading i.e. joke under general chat, nowhere else, what is the problem?!

To those who can construct jokes....a VERY big thank you from someone who cannot tell a joke to save their life, and who can suffer from severe depression so needs these moments of enlightenment! :y :y

So all I would say is please everyone lighten up, have fun when possible, but just keep it all in the right section as I believe Debs and co always do! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;)  Do not make the mistake of over formalizing this site and making it like so many others....damned boring!

There are an outstanding number of sufferers, I was on citalopram myself a couple of years back, haven't fully got over it yet.

It's one of those things that comes back to haunt :(

Btw - nobody has questioned that we shouldn't have jokes - I too think they are excellent - I was merely asking if there could be a more effective way to catagorise them...

The only problem I have with Jokes is if they are too long, when I firs come on I tend to skip through to see what interests me, as a result any long joke gets bypassed. This though is my choice.

The simplest way to do that James is to have a sction of it's own purely for the jokes.  Maybe just a new section in one of the current groups, or even a new section in a new group.

This of course is up to the admin, allthough initially time comsuming to set up in the long run it might be benefictial to all.

Just a thought.

Same idea goes for a feed back section that I just saw  a thread for in the forum related/forum problems group.
