I know how you feel :-/

At my place they seem to have lost the plot a little, we have two networks, one is connected to the corprate network so links all sites together and this we use to order parts ect and the other is an 8mg wifi network just for our workshop.

Now whats stupid is while we require no individual logon for the corprate network (a default workshop logon is used) we can visit any site we like (within reason, no porn ect) while the wifi one we use for the laptops we have on our benches, now these are registered to use, the mac address of each laptop is logged and the name of each laptop is our engineer number, now we cant acccess hardly anything i cant even get to the sony support site to get drivers ect.

So the pc's that cant trace who uses them can access what they like but the ones that are tracable cant??  :o

What about proxy sites?

What about proxy sites?
Most corporate setups, you have to use the corporate proxies to get out anyway, so no chance of using 3rd party proxies.  Also, most big corporates are using intelligent webscanners rather than simple blocks as was the case 5 years ago...

In addition to all of the above, if you're on one of my sites you'll be aware I keep the cattle prod charged up at ALL times.

There are only two thing that will make me use it, Porn and Proxy avoidance.

The don't call me BOFH for nothing  :D

To give you a quick insight as to how it works :

You type a web address, our proxy looks at its category in the database.
Then it checks the returned page for key words and 'scores' each word from another database.
Then it strips the adverts,
then it delivers the page and logs username, date time etc etc

You can try but you won't get very far these days :(

I changed the Websense block pages to a picture of the Director and some text saying 'Please call my PA to book an appointment regarding your attempted breach of the Internet Security Policy'.... Web traffic was reduced considerably after that!

Yep, I learn't from the BOFH as well!..... Now where are those 'evidence tapes?'

Nope.  Didn't even ask for it.  Have a DSL line on my desk, so makes no odds to me...
