Title: Ford Fusion brakes... think I found the problem... do you concur? ;)
Post by: Webby the Bear on 16 June 2013, 17:12:48
Hi guys,

As I posted a while back I was having a grinding from my brakes on the Ford Fusion but only on initial moving of the car (car in auto ''D'' creeping forward with brakes half on). Quiet during road use.

So today I whipped out the copper grease and cleaned the discs and pads and cailper bracket etc. still no improvement.

HOWEVER discs I noticed are particularly rusty. very strange as we use the car every day. anyway a quick looksy in the back of the Haynes and it says if you have a grinding noise (I do) it could be excessive corrosion of the discs.

you reckon this is the problem???

cheers guys

did you run side of screwdriver around edge of the rotors disc's to remove the loose rust? and you sure its front not rear? drums on rear can make a racket of them frords ;)

It will be noisy if the discs are rusty. Nothing to unusual there. Mine does it on first application at the top of the road after a lay up. Worse in winter obviously.  :y

I always run screwdriver along edge-jam it by caliper and turn disc--wear glass's mate-the crap flies in all directions-and eyeballs not available through gm even with trade card :y and pattern ones are rubbish too

cheers for the info guys. as I said theyre not noisy during driving. its solely just when creeping forward and im half on the brakes.

I think im just going to replace the discs/pads.

symes re the glasses..... I had to wear them today to get that anti rattle spring back in... that was a bit of a bitch!  ;D spring flew out at me twice  ;D

cheers mate  :y

changing subject slightly.... is there a reason the discs would rust even with constant use? even if they were rusty before I got the car I would have thought the rust would have gone as we now use it regularly?

it's the fact that the pads dont use as much asbestos these days-and the quality/type of metal used for making disc's

If light rust isn't being swept off then you have to be looking for a seized caliper/piston or rusted in pad.

If the discs get too heavily rusted or pitted then normal braking won't clean the rust off. (the pad will wear away first)

Wifeys Fiesta has had a couple of brake issues, a crack sound every time you brake that has never been solved and the back drum stared making a grinding noise, turned out to be a tiny but pointless little clip had come adrift and lodged between the drum and shoe.

holds hand brake arm to shoe-stops it sliding out ;)
