Just recently I have been told that the 2.5 TD lost all it's coolant!!! :-\
This came from my son who had been driving it! Since I have been back I have checked and it ain't the HBV and it ain't the heater matrix (or pipes leading to it).
So, a few days into the visit and son tells me he was in his local garage looking to see when his Allroad was going to be ready and he mentioned the loss of coolant to the heed honcho there.
He (apparently) carried out a pressure test and stated the pump was leaking (a bit). I have since found out that she uses about a litre of water every 300 miles (couple of runs to Edinburgh airport and back). Can the pump seal suddenly fail or will it just get progressively worse.
Time is not on my side at the moment, I have read the other posts on the subject and it appears easily do-able, I just won't get one here in time before I fly back home.......
I still have to get the leaking pump verified but as yet, I just haven't found the time to get under the front to see what's what.
Is it possible it might be a hose leaking? There is definitely a leak from somewhere near the front of the engine, low down....... Hopefully once the other two cars ( son's) are sorted and up for sale I will get a chance to get under and have proper look. In the meantime if anyone could give some pointers it would be much appreciated.
Cheers

if he's done a pressure test and said the pump's leaking I wouldn't have thought you need to do any more diagnostic work... especially if your son was there too to verify? :-\
just replace the pump following the guide here. if you got the Halfords tool set or equivalent its a nice little job... oh and a torque wrench :y

oooh just re-read your message again. in answer to your question I don't recall any hoses near there. I think its just the pump itself :y

This is true of the V6 but not sure about the Op's TD ???

shite sorry lads... didn't read that :-[ im gonna shut my face!!! ;D

Well, that was a bit of an epic, trying to drive up on ramps with no guide, on loose gravel, and no end stops on the ramps....... :-[ went too far! Ouch and oops.
No real damage apart from one's pride!
So, inconclusive with regard to the leak, there is a large bore hose right by the pump body but
No positive leak seen from either the pump body or the hose. This is without removing
anything as time has once again run out.
The pressure test info came from a reasonably reliable source but not witnessed by my young lad so still needs further investigation, which will have to wait until August now.
At least I know the low coolant level warning works when it should, about a litre down and up it flashes! SWMBO will have to live with it, at least she knows what to do now.
More info as the investigation continues.
Thanks for your input anyway guys.

I'm correct in thinking Omegatoy is the resident diesel expert yes?
I'll give him a shout a bit later on, in the meantime is there anyone here that knows a bit about these water pumps? Question I posed earlier was, would they, all of a sudden, let go or will the leak just get progressively worse when run?
Reason being is the car doesn't get used much and when I was running her last week, she was fine (apart from the leak) no overheating and as far as I can tell the pump works fine, temperature rose quickly initially then settled down to just under 90 apart from the occasional blip to just over 90 when climbing a few hills (as normal).
From experience will this be just the seal?

WATER pump has a large O ring around it jon, suppose it could leak a little never known it though, more likely to be a hose somewhere near it, bottom hose can leak at it junction with rad, funny enough i have a good water pump here for a td its used but i replaced it with a metal impellor one just in case!dont know why i kept it!! :-\

Hey Graham.....
Well I have opted for belt and braces in this case. I declined the offer of a brand new pump from Opel and went for an ebay special (with metal Impeller) at less than 1/2 the price. Also going for a new seal from Opel courtesy of that nice Mr Clears plus a few other bits and bobs for the other fleet members, Carlton/Zafira etc LOL.
I'm glad you said that about the hoses cos I was thinking that but never got the time for in depth investigation, most of the time in Scotland was spent with the granddaughter (as it should be)!
At least I can go back in August and have a heads up (been studying the engine manual download as well).
Hoses are easy! Pumps not so!
Anyhoo, good to hear from you mate, hope to see you sometime (this year) you know how it is. :y

as you say so it should be mate!! actually water pump on td is very very easy!! lol
that reminds me,know your on facebook but are you amember of the various expats selling pages?cheap cars and parts as well as just about anything else you can think of!! :y

Erm, not sure Graham, is that the one Peter frequents?

Following on from the above, I now have definitive proof of where the leak is.

As you can see this is at the front of the engine and is corroded through enough to leak out.
For the oil burner experts:- Is this easy to fix or is there a really difficult union with the front of the block (that I can't see easily)
I don't have my downloaded TD manual with me at the moment which is why I'm asking.
Cheers
