Title: Steering wheels.
Post by: albitz on 18 June 2013, 09:05:06
Are they the same across the range or did they change at some point - i.e. mini f/l to facelift for example ?
Thanks. :)

The airbags differ, and certainly the Irmscher wheels are different pre and post facelift if that helps :-\

Don't see why not :-\ might lose remote controls for the radio, but you could, in theory, transfer the horn wiring from one wheel to the next, reusing the existing airbag :-\ Certainly can't see the column itself being different :y

pre-facelifts dont have buttons on sides so will be useless if the wheel have

The buttons are easily removed, only two screws each :y

Refitting would depend on the hardware built into the wheel, but guess a bit of trimming/Sikaflex or epoxy would soon sort that if planning on fitting an earlier wheel to a later car :-\

Tried it myself with a non audio style Irmscher wheel some years ago.

The wheel has no mounting screws for the radio controls so only real option would be to loose that feature as triming the sides of the wheel body would be a messy finish imho. The airbag casing fitted ,and would imagine the spline onto the main column is the same across the year/range so only problem was mounting the audio and airbag unit.

Someone has asked me for a steering wheel for a 97 mfl with or without buttons. I have one with buttons from a f/l car,but wanted to check id it will be suitable.Dont want to sell someone something which is no good for their car. Im still not completely sure tbh. :-\

MFL & FL are the same. Ascertain from buyer whether it`s actually a MFL he has (side airbags, audio buttons)

Except the colour varies, doesn't it - MFL being blacker?

Sure my original MV6 steering wheel (and dash) is almost black, Elite black is more a charcoal grey.
