Hi guys,
As per my recent thread regarding my Ford Fusion I lubed up the pads nicely, cleaned off the crap and that didn't solve my brake grind on initial movement with brakes half applied.
SO.
I went out and did some diagnosis work today. mum moved the car while I listened and it seemed to me that it was defo coming from the front. checked all suspension components. all tight as a nuns crutch. good! but i'm still thinking i need to replace the pads and discs.
ANYWAY, got to the rear and press down on the rear of the car...... grinding/clunking noise similar to the aforementioned noise ??? ??? ???
anyway had the rear up in the air and like the front I checked all rear suspension components. no play whatsoever. good!
i took the car off the stands and pushed it up and down again... clunking, grinding etc. really quite bad. took the handbrake off and sound goes away ::)
i'm thinking i need to get the drum off and see whats what.
do y'all concur? :)

Not sure what the rear brake setup on those is like - if it's 'drum in disc' or drum then it sounds like the handbrake shoes are making insufficient contact and not locking the wheels completely; as you bounce the car you'll rotate the wheel very slightly and the shoes tend to grind on whatever rust is inside the drum on the face.. the M3 did exactly that until I did the rear discs ('drum in disc' the same as the Omega)..

Exactly what is happening Aaron :y no discs at the back... just the drums.
you reckon i should just replace them or do a bit of adjusting with the star wheel (theres a little access hole to the star adjuster through the back of the hub :))

I'd pull the drum off and inspect the shoes and the inner drum surface - you might be able to rescue them with liberal application of a wire brush on the drum and possibly a little emery paper on the shoes.. unless the shoes look like the ones in the M3; like the surface of an LP ;D

is it possible that they need adjusting also? wondering if theyre too loose or too tight :-\

i think it might be best to change the shoes,as it sounds like they are wearing very low,and also check the torque setting,if its the same as the fiesta,puma,escort,its 230lb ft :y
which brings me nicely on to torque wrench,lol,if your over this way sometime,can i borrow it again if it goes up to 230 as i need to check my rear bearings after i changed them,also it might be worth changing the bearings aswell if removing the drum :y :y

Yeah course you can boys :) just checked and it goes up to 200nm.... no idea what the foot pound equivalent is :-\
i'll more than likely be over kettering next week. is that cool?
i'm gutted cos the axle nut on the rears needs to go to 235nm ::) ::) ::)

sorry it was 230 nm,i can change the rear bearings within 5 mins :y

sadly mate only goes to 200nm but of course youre more than welcome to use it. you want me to pop it over still next week?
if so ill be near the warren pub... is it easy to get to yours from there

ill get the fronts done this wek too. hopefully that will sort out the front grinding.... then the drums to do ::)
you know those stupid clips the secure the inner pad to the caliper.... can i discard these or do they have to be used? i keep the anti rattle clip though :y

you need to keep them,im working sat morning,can call in after work if that helps :y

that's just made me think of something.....
at the front both inner pads that attach to the calipers have tat 4 pronged clip thingy...... BOTH outer pads don't. but it says in the Haynes that there should be a clip on the outer ones too.
could this be the reason for the grinding i wonder?

soz to keep on about this stooped ford ::)
my impact wrench has a torque of 450nm. does that mean it will undo any bolt/nut that's done up to that torque? the axle nuts on the rear are done up to 235nm so i'm hoping this will be childs play for my gun but just want to check :y

In theory yes it should but sometimes what it says on the label ain't quite the same as what it does ::) ;)
