Title: purchasing (not pirating) music
Post by: pscocoa on 22 June 2013, 21:55:59
Who still buys music these days? I just bought Delta Machine by Depeche Mode, Grrr by the Stones and Culture of Fear by Thievery Corporation. Most people seem to pirate but I still pay for stuff - a good lad I am.

I think the majority still buy, rather than just copy. Though I think more buy downloads from likes from gayTunes, and probably more singles than albums.

I prefer CDs still - something physical for my cash.

That said, I probably buy more 2nd hand ones than new now - but then the town centre where I work has a load of charity shops, and no music shops ;D

The odd track I like from an obscure artist I'll get from ITunes. Any more than that I'll buy a new CD, as my taste is up to date. :)

...this also means I don't buy many, due to trash in the charts.

Absolute radio has become my favourite radio station lately. No rap, no boy or girl bands just lots of classics, Indy, and proper bands.

I always buy CDs. Don't use downloads due to protection and you never actually owning it.

As an IP software developer, I always buy and don't steal other people's IP.

At least its mine, physically in my hand.

When the likes of crApple go tits up (they will), and gayTunes can no longer confirm your purchases with the gayTunes store, thus removes them, my CDs will still work.

In addition, my CDs play in my crappy FL headunit ;D

Yep I still buy on CD and always will. I want the case and artwork etc. I don't buy anywhere near what I dd on vinyl but I still want the physical item.
I suppose for me it is the collectors bit.

I occasionally buy and sell second hand records.

I buy loads of physical CDs. Even if I grab an album via P2P download, its just to see if it's any good before buying it. Never used iTunes and unlikely to. And, as someone else mentioned, standard Miggy head unit won't play copied CDs.

My biggest recent problem is the demise and rescue of HMV. Their online shop was never restored.

Now, I go to Fopp Records, and spend a fortune in one go.  ;D   ;D

Radio ? Team Rock Radio or Planet Rock on DAB. Great stuff   :y

CDs are the only medium (apart from vinyl!) where the sound quality is up to par.

I don't happen to believe a DRM'ed, lossy compressed file download is worth any money, so you won't find me buying any. :)

DRM is easy to circumvent, it's the fact that the music is in a lossy format that stops me from using the download route.

Yup  :y     :y

Plus, I dislike the control freak nature of iTunes. Having to do what it wants me to do rather than what I want to do.

The only problem with Itunes is that you need either a gaypod, gayphone or a gaypad for it to work properly  ::)

For me, it's either the shops (HMV/Tescos) or Play.com :y

Try iPhone Magic Platinum (http://www.xilisoft.com/iphone-magic.html), it got a friend out of deep do-do when iTunes failed her.

You also need a Mac. iTunes on Windows is guaranteed to delete any music that Mr Jobs didn't like. iTunes is best avoided under all circumstances if possible.

I go one stage further. I just don't buy anything that starts with an " i "      ;D

Yeah, works for me, except for the phone. They are the only ones who can make a smartphone that is genuinely useful to me. Android, Gooseberry and Windows all fall flat on email/collaboration. So I have to be partially gay.

Thats the downside, most compilations have a handful of good tracks and then trash. It was Europe, BTW.

Do you think he used to hang around with the boys in chinos, pastel coloured shirts, those gay little leather ties and permed hair?  :o Oh.. Or maybe he was one of them?  :-X

I had chinos and pastel shirts in the late 80s. Never had a leather tie, though, so never came fully out.

White socks. I remember white socks.

According to a couple of friends I have who understand such things, its keys hanging off belts now, and which side suggests how you want to play...
