Title: Leak from gearbox area (just noticed)
Post by: jtypecav on 25 June 2013, 10:19:01
Well a new cat back exhaust is on it's way, but while investigating as to whether I'd truly gotten a full life from the exhaust or not, I noticed this:

Notice the leak on the pipe itself?

Upon further quick investigation before work this morning..

The MOT is on the 28th is a leak here problematic, and is it easier to fix without the exhaust on as it's coming off anyway?

The bizarre thing is that the MK2 cav I have just re-commissioned now needs gearbox oil seals too..

Any heads up of the likely cost / issue here?

Yeah it was all the oil and the pool on the floor - what's involved / likely leaking was what I was wondering about!

Looks like the diff pinion oil seal has sprung a leak (not uncommon).

Thanks Kevin, big job? Mot Fail if not done immediately?

Not a problem for MOT.

Keep the diff oil level topped up and see how much it's losing, I'd say. Not a difficult job but needs care to keep the preload on the bearing correct. There's a maintenance guide, I believe.

I have the same problem.MOT man issued an advisory on it last year. Currently trying to decide whether to change the seal or the diff.
I have a nice dry spare diff, but its from a 3.0 and my car is a 2.5,so different ratio. Not sure how much difference the different ratio will make tbh.
