Title: Classic car project - Idea is in the air.......
Post by: Crazycarzowner on 25 June 2013, 21:46:42
Well now I've built my new garage, I need something to occupy it. I've always wanted a XJ-S Jag (I know must be bonkers  :D :D :D ) But I love the shape and style of em. Anyways I've been looking at a few, not the big V12's but 3.6's, but GOOD GRIEF!!!! the prices of em  :o :o :o

I'm into 80's Jags in a big way and am aware of most of their weaknesses, went to view a couple recently which showed all the signs of tin worm, leaky door seals & dodgy electricary, knackered suspension no MOT's and was astonished at the prices. Didn't think it was really that much of a sought after classic  :( anyway the search goes on.

get a real classic--anything before jan 74=tax exempt-1960 or older =no mot best bargain out there is rover p6-Very first car to win safety award and first to win car of the year--every panel detaches and cheap too :y if you go 80's you got mot/tax and if you paying-might as well get modern :y

I thought that was pre 1972, or at least it used to be, have they changed the date?  :-\ :-\ iirc originally they were going to say anything older than 25 years, but changed their minds.... ::) ::)

doubt it--too many later cars about--however many clubs do keep fighting :y one bad point that is trying to sneak in is about modifying--trying to stop it---now that will bring the custom car/bike scene into it :y it's a pain trying to keep total of 8points so you can keep reg number and avoid vosa inspection/re registration >:(

I'm with you on the XJS, I've nearly bought one on several occasions. They're a proper Jag, good looking with utterly effortless performance which makes a V6 Omega feel like Reliant Robin.

A mate bought one a few years back for £400. It was solid, a good runner and looked tidy until you got to the interior. Which was a mess unfortunately. I followed him home in my 525, and his first words were "It's not very fast". However, he was pulling away from me, up a steep hill, and I couldn't go any faster. And that was starting at 60mph of a roundabout. The V12 is absolutely superb, if, and it's a big if, you can afford to put petrol in it!

I had looked at the V12  :o :o :o not bothered about the fuel costs as it would be a weekend car, its just most of them are pushing 20 years old now & they are very complex engines engines. Nowt really wrong with the mechanics its more the useless electronics which can cause all ends of problems. I would consider one but am very wary of them. They used to quote 5 hours just for a plug change  ::) getting at them is a work of art  ;D

The 4.0 would be ideal & more or less the same performance of the V12, as for tax £225 / year and £158 insurance on a 8000 mile limit with 2 drivers & euro cover. Just need to find a half decent one now, not too bothered about body as panels a easy to come by as long as its structurally sound & the engine doesn't fall out  ;D ;D ;D

You don’t have to pay vehicle tax on vehicles made before 1 January 1973 - latest date from gov.uk (Updated 31 May 2013) ;)

Remember reading it was to be changed to Jan '74, but don't think  it happened - nor do the gov web site ::)

Hi Jason. I have owned a total of 16 jags. xk120 roadster (3) ss100. 1. mk5, 2.5 &3.5l. (2) 3mk7s. 1mk 10. 1daimler double6. 3xj6s  &2 types 2.8 &v12. I did all the work on them myself and I never many problems, su fuel pumps in the early ones were a bit iffy till they put the the fuel pumps in the tanks. plenty of  oil & filter changes, & general maintenance &you wont have much trouble. there is a m reg 3.4 jag sport at M&S cars with service history that looks tidy. Mel.

Get the V12! It's an absolutely stonking engine - even in the XJ40 XJ12 I had it made the car a hoot to drive (luckily we didn't know how rotten the chassis was at that point! ;D) and at least as quick, if not quicker than, the Omega.. it'd be grand in an XJS especially with a manual cogswapper.
