The rear lighter socket didn't work so I put a fuse (20A in 27) in all fine, I noted that the fuse also fed the self levelling suspension so was looking for any problems with that but there were none.
Went on a long road trip to Germany 1500 kms no problems.
Left the car for a couple of days, filled the car with fuel and went for a cuppa.
When I came back the boot was right up in the air!!
Removed the fuse, still up in the air, in a panic as we had to come home I took the airline off the shock absorber and down she came. Came home fine.
The sensor is connected ok so I was wondering if anyone knows a test or repair procedure for it. Strange that it was ok for 1500kms?
also can anyone help me with a part number for it?
Thanks

Somebody pulled the fuse for reasons you have found.
Replace sl pump. Behind drivers fog lite. Its failing to release air...
...but test the sensor as the guide to be sure its not the sensor at fault. Ie, raise the lever on the sensor, it should raise the car as you raise the arm, and drop the car as you drop the arm, but given your suspected fault, when you drop the arm the car should stop rising instead. If you drop the arm and the car still rises, sensor faulty.
Also, if the air bladders on the shocks have no air in them, suspension movement will, sooner or later, destroy the bladders.

the most likely problem you have is corrosion in the plug connector on harness to compressor under headlight assembly-easiest cure is to cut plug off and solder wires directly-done 3x migs this way when others have diagnosed knackered pumps :y My miggy still behaves fine afte doing mine 3 years ago :y
-
Fair point, but betting on air not releasing for whatever reason. :)
-
yep when they corrode it seems to pump up-which overloads tiny relay--that will need replacing too-forgot to add that :-[
-
well thanks for the advice. Maybe the corrosion is a possibility as I had a look today and took the arm off the sensor, when I moved it up I expected the air pump to start but nothing, I took the air connector off the shock expecting the air to release but nothing. I'll look at the connector on the pump tomorrow, Symes where is the relay you mention, is it the one in the fusebox?
Thanks
-
yes its a small black one-like headlight high beam relay-you could swap them over-to test :y they under steering wheel :y
-
well couldn't wait till tomorrow, light nights!
changed over the relays, headlamps work ok with either so I guess they are ok and you can feel them clicking in the headlamp socket. I unplugged the pump at the connector and wd40'd them, I'm guessing that if they are corroded wiggling would have got some action. I disconnected the actuator and moved it up expecting the pump to work but no, nothing. So it is something intermittent, bearing in mind the first problem was it was jacked up high.
When I move the actuator I would expect the relay to click but again nothing, so maybe it is the actuator? is it a switch that can be tested?
thanks for the help

have you checked plug under front bumper to pump-seem to me you checked one at rear level sensor-yet that one rarely gets corroded
-
yes thats the one i have checked, I havent checked the actuator yet
-
mmmmm check fuse is tight--connection in fuse holder can work loose mate-again under steering wheel :y
-
thanks for the tip but the cigar lighter is ok and that's on the same fuse
-
no there is another fuse Tony--its F27 top row 6th in from right :y
-
thanks but this all started with the rear cigar lighter not working, so I replaced that and then had the problem with the rear jacking up so I'm pretty sure that is the right one and yes it is fuse 27.
Any more ideas? how does it actually work to reduce the height?
I'll have a look at the connectors on the sensor tomorrow.
Does anyone have a wiring diagram for the self levelling suspension?
-
the pump turns one way to fill and opposite way to draw out :y check inside pump connections though--every one I have seen had corrosion on earth wire(gone white :'( ) if both fuses ok-then check power is getting to pump-if yes -then pump is fubar'd
-
ahh now I get it, which is the other fuse?
-
right mate-lets start again fuses=2 off
F27=6 in from right top row + F15 directly beneath it(middle row) hope that helps you mate
-
HI my self levelling pump failed on my 3.2 was badly corroded on connections and air lines rotten an split, bought a new complete pump assembly from main dealer for £50.00 + vat thought better with new as any secondhand pumps are all about 10 years old, cheers Eric
-
thanks Eric and Symes, I've checked both fuses, hoping its a poor connection, I'll get the meter on it tomorrow, guess you are right about secondhand pumps too Eric they will be a bit old now.
-
Well I've had the pump off this morning, for anyone doing this you need to remove the pump and the mounting from the car, the bolts holding the pump to the mounting just spin and you need to be above them.
Anyway tested out the pump and it works fine, my pump won't operate unless the engine is running?
I'm coming to the conclusion that it is the sensor as it will pump the car up occasionally but never lets it down. Has anyone had these to bits to repair rather than replace? I have been offered a secondhand one but may go the stealer route anyone know the price new? I live in France and everything here is a ripoff!!
Thanks for any advice
-
Well to all those interested this is now FIXED.
Thanks to allbitz for the sensor which di not solve the problem, I did a bit more investigation and found I could get the pump to operate from the connector at the sensor, and likewise get the solenoid (mounted on the pump) to operate to release the pressure.
The fault was a corroded connector under the rear seat squab, I cut this out, soldered the wires and all is good now.
Anyone want a tested and verified height sensor, only £316 at the stealers!!

well glad you stuck to it mate---well done :y :y :y :y :y :y :y
