Really want to get windows tinted but too tight to get it done professionally :(
I know the window tinting films are tricky buggers to fit properly without making the Omega look like a scabby transit van so that's out
Has anyone tried using window tinting spraypaint? How awkward / effective is it?
...or should I just put my hand in my pocket and pay for it properly ;D
-
Personaly I would pay for it to be done professionly.
Two main reasons, if they cock it up its their fault.
Two. If it turns out to be illegal and not letting in enough light you have something to fall back on.
Iirc someone here got quote for estate, rear windows were 200 quid.
-
I have had mine done in the past, cost me £320 for the lot, and they were not keen on doing it.
By all accounts the Omega is a very difficult car to do, especially the back window.
Most companies will not do anything forward of the B pillar these days, even if you sign a disclaimer, this is why i am not having my new one done as i hate the look of the back being done and the front being normal, looks half done >:(
Personally i would bite the bullet and have the pros do it, if they cock it up then you have come back and from experience they don't cock up
Tunnie, if they do tint the fronts they have no liability as far as i am aware, it is down to the owner of the car, and more responsible tinters are not doing anything forward of the B pillar these days
-
Correct Jay -- its entirely down to the driver.
I have been quoted £160 for the rear of my saloon - inc rear screen
Tried spray on stuff quite a few years ago --- absolute unadulterated cr*p

That's the advice I was looking for - always difficult to make a decision if you've got no experience!
Thanks all

There's some cheap tinting film on ebay that I have been looking at.
Would possibly consider trying it myself for the price, less than £10.
Got good feedback on it, I suppose it's how handy and patience you are at attempting it.
Not lost much if it all goes wrong, have you.

On a recent police programme, Street Wars / Road Wars? or similar a New Range Rover was pulled over and, long story short, told to remove the film of the side windows. they had bought this from a main dealer like this. The chap mentioned that he was going to pop along to the dealers and have a word. ;)

Yeah saw that prog, Humberside traffic cops.
Wifey driving the RR was told her front side windows were too darkly tinted. The cops measured the degree of tint which were illegal, told her to remove it there and then or she would get an on the spot fine.
I think you can go up to 35% tint of the front sides before they are illegal, correction if I'm wrong.

Technically 30 --- but as the law is now worded even a clear film on front is contrary to regs

i have done window drop glass in the past, it was not easy.
ended up with the glass out of the car and in the bath, the bath was half full of water and the glass submerged, the film applied without any dust.....
once the film was on the glass i then heated it using a hot air gun, this shrunk the film to the glass and made it really tough
still took me 6 hours to do the lot, the end result was brilliant, but the one window i didn't do was the rear windscreen, double curves are very difficult to do

£100 for all the rears(mr tint)

pay ;)looks great when done :P

Thats exactly how it should be done as for getting the fronts tinted its upto you i had it done on mine and the few times i was pulled over just always wound the fronts down and nothing was ever said got away with it for 3 years then got cought and forgot to wind them down had to take them off there and then so 3 years isnt to bad, had them put back on again a week later and still on now another 2 years on so end of the day upto you what you do just keep an eye out for the boys in blue. :y

Might be a daft question, I assume the film can only go on the inside?
Anyone put it on the outside?
Mick
-
No -- as far as I am aware it only goes on the inside.
-
I've tinted a granada and a discovery in the past and if you take time to do it the results can be brilliant. The back window of the granny wasn't easy though and ended up chucking a couple of attempts. I didn't do the front side windows of the granny but I did on the disco. Never got pulled over. However I bought a jag with what I thought were factory tints until I was pulled over.
The windows were checked and the tints were stopping 75% of light rather than allowing 75%. The police and VOSPA told me I would have to have the car towed home as I wasn't allowed to drive it. But one of the VOSPA technicians noticed it was film and I had to remove it before I was allowed to drive home. The police apologised and said that really they were aiming at the boy-racer fraternity. I guess thats why they watch me get in my car at a petrol station before stopping me on the forecourt????

be aware guys/gals that VOSA are talking about issuing us MOT stations with a"tintometer" in the next 18mths to use on the test. 8-)

Mr Tint in Glasgow.
£100 with a lifetime guarantee.

if you look at a piece of auto glass you will see there is a %age number, that is the amount light the windown allows through
On the Omega it states 70%, so any tint going on the front (even if it wasn't illegal) would take it over the 30% threshold
