Last time I had ab absess i took 1 nurofen and 1 paracetemol every 2hrs. Recommended by dentist but don't do it for more than 2 - 3 days

Once they kicked in kept the pain killing at max instead of going up and down as they wear off

Also the amoxicillin wasn't strong enough for me - gave me something stronger (no alcohol stuff) which cleared it in 2 days

hth
Phil

ps just had a bad tooth removed today myself

Amoxicillin is the stock antibiotic given to all. It's not very good, especially if you have used it before. After three days your abcess should be well on the mend, down to about one quarter of what it was.

Well I had the same very very recently. Upper right molar.

You don't mention dosage

I am hesitant about offering advice   :-X I took Ibuprofen 2 x 200Mg tabs. Not nurofen Plus. Cheapo Ibuprofen from most supermarkets or chemists. The key is the Ibuprofen which is anti-inflammatory, and it's the inflammation that causes the pain. Pain killers just relieve the pain not the cause of it.

Just had tooth abscess sorted yesterday - root canal treatment. Dentist managed to reuse crown after all which saved £500.

Abscesses usually reappear so maybe get it checked out.

Had an abscess few months back on rear bottom molar tooth (unbelievable pain) but found a way to ease the pain by swirling cool water around the tooth till iy got warm and do the same over and over for 12 hours which made the pain worse after i had to stop the water method to go to sleep, Anyways had it cleaned out well the top part I believe by the dentist and had the same antibiotics mentioned for 2 weeks cleared up the yellow type colour puss but have had the puss come and go since but its back again for a few weeks now on the side of the tooth gum part, Going to the hospital on the 17th. Hope the tooth can be saved its going to be a bitch to eat without it  :'(

Tooth will be taken out once abcess is gone

Whatever the outcome, Paul, you have my sympathy. They are very painful. I hope you manage to get some sleep tonight. If you can't go off in bed, where you have nothing else to think about, try the sofa with something crap on the telly to take your mind off it.

yep.. not very effective as its very old.. bacterias have mutated zillion times after this antibiotic have started production.. :-\

and I must add mouth infections are dangerous as channels end up in brain :(

ps: in case its not cured use a new generation antibiotic and be sure its cured properly .. may require longer time than estimated..

Pain relief. Ring your dentist and ask what they recommend. Then get it on prescription written by the dentist (at least that is what happens in Spain).

Years ago I had an abcess from hell in England. Didn't respond to the first two weeks on antibiotics or the second three weeks (five weeks without an alcoholic drink!). Changed dentist and new dentist said I can cure that. Go ahead I said. He ripped it out (pushed it out). Sent me off home with a wad of cotton wool and blood dripping out of each side of my mouth. I still can't believe I managed to walk a mile home.

Now it is great, I keep whole peanuts in the gap. Handy if you get hungry.

Hope you get sorted, horrible thing toothache. You have my sympathy.

YES!! Warm (as warm as you can take) salt water was recommended to me years ago when I had an abscess under my wisdom tooth. The salt helps cleanse, whilst the heat encourages the abscess to burst (by opening the pores). Grotty, but very effective. :y :y :y

The pain of the abscess is cause by the pressure of the pus, not the infection itself. Once the pressure is released, the pain will subside rapidly.

Last one I had I helped it along with a needle, not necessarily the right thing to do, but helped with the pain and eventually resolved itself....... :y

Cycle the pain killers with another type. Dose per hours limits the number of doses per day and they wear off too quick.

So take a different type of pain killer (paracetamol? or whatever's the strongest is you can get out of the chemist) before the previous runs out, that way you don't exceed the prescribed dose of one, but keep some sort of pain relief at all times.

Other types may be more effective by the sound of it anyway.

You are so much better off getting it seen to when abscess is in quiet phase. People think because it dies down they can live with it - it then returns with a vengeance.

Have taken regulation 6 tablets a day Ibuprofen and hope this will be last day now following treatment on Monday - was painful for 24 hours - now virtually ok.

This Happened to me a couple of years ago. I was in ireland seeing wifes family and one came out just before going so took some antibiotics and I thought all well. Two days into the trip came back so bad I thought somebody had got into my head with a jack hammer. Manage to see a dentist and told him I wasnt leaving until he sorted it. He gave me gas and air then pulled the tooth the relief was unbelivable.
