I passed my driving test in about 1967. I went to live in the Netherlands in 1974, and came back to live in the UK in 1994. Since I came back, I've noticed that other drivers keep waving at me. I have deduced that they are thanking me for my courteous driving, and I now wave at other people as the occasion merits.
Now I'm sure that I wasn't taught to do this in the 1960s. So when and how did it develop?
(As far as I can recall, they don't do this in the Netherlands, but then courteous driving isn't done there either, so it's not an issue. It's more "kill or be killed" there.)

When I let people out of junctions or give them right of way most will wave their thanks,as do I when given the same courtesy by others.I know I've been doing this since the seventies and I seem to recall my father doing the same in the fifties.

I don't go slow enough to get or see any reactions but then again there are no large city's near me so traffic is never that bad to see anyone's reactions. But do get the odd funny look when overtaking on country roads :-X ;D

Those who can remember a coffee advert with garath hunt.
Professional drivers refer to the finger signs/universal sign language
1 finger= 1sugar
2 finger=2 zuger
the waved 0 = coffee sir
