Title: Never listen to a woman
Post by: horsecow on 13 July 2013, 17:53:15
With all this good weather I thought it would be a good idea to dig out the kites and hit the beach tomorrow. Found the kites, took them out and proceeded to unravel them and check them over. First one was a 12m and checked out fine, got it packed up again no problem. Had the 2nd one a 16m all laid out and inflated when the brother in law arrived and decided he would like to try it out as he'd never seen one before. I told him it wasn't a good idea as there wasn't enough room but after a heavy case of nagging from the wife and sister I decided against my better judgement to give him a go. DISASTER, the silly bugger managed to get the kite up in the air only to crash it onto the only barbed wire fence anywhere near him!! Needless to say part of the kite now looks like a sieve and what had previously been unused and worth about £500 is now in tatters and probably worth about 50p. Needless to say NEVER listen to a woman!!

I'm hoping I can get it repaired but talk about a downer!!

£500 for a kite?

Blue Peter mate. 50p including some sticky back plastic.

My schoolboy pal had a standard kite. His dad bought him a mile of line. We managed to have the whole amount out on a number of occasions.

If I were you I would propose to him visiting a kite shop where you choose but he pays...

In fairness the poor guy was completely gutted but it was as much my fault as his tbh! he kites are powerful enough to lift me completely off the ground so I should have known better than to let a complete novice have a go in such a confined space. Anyways its done now and it gives me some leeway with the mrs. Next time I arrive home with something she classes as a huge waste of money I'll refer back to the kite incident and say that I wouldn't have given him a go if it hadn't been for her nagging! :y

TBH Varche £500 is the lower end of the scale, these things can go as high as £2000. They are huge and immensely powerful, check out kitesurfing on youtube

A few summers ago we spotted a bloke on Butser Hill with one of these things
The kite dragged the flyer bodily sideways & dumped him the hawthorne on the side of the slope, looked like a harness affair so he couldn`t let go
It must have been painful, it`s pitiful to hear a grown man scream like that :o
