Title: New electric shower recommendations.
Post by: Jimbob on 13 July 2013, 20:30:27
Our shower (Mira Sport 10.8) is acting the mick, and has lost most of its temperature adjustment.

On the lookout for a new one..

Quite tempted by the new Mira Sport Max 10.8 with 'airboost' but the extra electronics concern me a bit.

Anyone got / seen / tried one?  or have any recommendations for an alternative?

I know its Electic so will never win any high flow awards....but do want the best flow possible while sticking with electric.
(power shower would be lovely...Maybe when we totally redesign the bathroom, but no time soon)

As always, want the performance, but also on a reasonable budget.  £250 tops really.

So electric shower only recommendations please.

Cheers

Round these parts, with water harder than Mike Tyson, it depends on the warranty period ime. Then give up with electric showers and go for a booster pump and shower bath mixer tap. Then, with an adjustable shower head you've got enough head pressure to save buying a tile cutter when you re do the bathroom. ;D

The lack of temperature adjustment might be due to a partially shorted solenoid, so it is lazy in regulating the hot water. I replaced one last year for a friend which cost a few pounds off ebay. Not the easiest of jobs, but easier than working on a Miggy.  ::)

I found the correct resistance for the solenoid online so I could check the old one with a multimeter before replacing it.

All sounds very posh! All basic here, I've got a pipe that comes off tap, it blasts water out at about mach2!

Might need a power shower for new place though, My parents have a triton aqua sensation, been in for good few years now, not missed a beat.

When it comes to showers, I'm with gayboy.  Errr, can I rephrase that? ;D

Seriously, leccy is always unsatisfyingly poor. 8KW isn't enough to heat water fast enough.

How much work would it be to run some piping for a shower from the hot water tank (note their are rules about where cold feed comes from), and pumping if necessary.

Go for a 3bar pump (not cheap) and a shower head the size of a dinner plate  :y
Fantastic shower.....only downside it empties the hot water tank in about 10mins  ;D

Agreed about electric showers although they do have the advantage that you don't need to heat a tank of hot water, and can use it when there is no hot water. I'd happily turn the hot water off in weather like this to have a cooler house.

That said, every shower I have had where the gubbins is in a box on the wall eventually fails due to damp getting in, so I would also side with gixer. You can also get some nice showers which use an external pump &/or heat regulator box which are ceiling fed and require minimal hacking about of the bathroom to fit. Probably outside the budget for this job, though.

I might be inclined to have a look at fixing the current one. It might be an easy fix. Bit of descaler in the control valve, perhaps, or inspect the electronics for signs of damp? With an electric shower, though, it really boils down to how much heat it's putting into the water, as that determines flow rate. Get the most powerful shower the wiring you have can support.

Cheers all....As stated changing shower type is not really possibly at the mo...

Is on the cards down the line, but needs a bathroom refit, and some heating work due to our warm air system.

Currently just use an immersion as use virtually no hot water.

So it is Electric and only electric we are looking at this time around.

A nice Mira Platinum power shower install with ceiling feed.

Easy to fit and easy to move to a new install when the bathroom gets changed.  ;D

it might also be the heater can - they are cheap to replace as well so it might be worth a check first.  before too long you'll find the new shower has pipes or power in a different place which means new tiles etc and the job can expand.

Power version for me every time as as hot cylinder is located low down in airing cupboard.
Just a bog standard Triton seems to do the trick, had it about 4 yrs and i am in a hard water area. :y

this may appear as a silly point, but have you considered isolating the water input and filling the unit with limescale remover, I have to do this with my line marking jets to rejuvenate them !
