I got this 3.2 V6 Estate in October and the seller had made an oilchange just before I bought it. He even pulled the oilstick to show how clean the oil was.
Anyway it was now time for an oilchange and of course I changed the filter as well. I have the old canister type on this engine.
When I removed the filter it was a disaster. Can't have been changed for a long time. It has a complete service book with GM shop up until 200.000 km, then the first owner sold it. It has now reached 280.000km and looking at the filter I suspect that it hasn't been changed since the last time it was at a GM shop.
Maybe it got distorted when I removed it, but it is really dirty and burnt.

Now it has a new clean filter and oil :)

I'm glad you found it when you did :o
-
Gosh, as said :o
-
Had a similar problem on mine had a hole through it most likely didn't bother to change as a little more awkward to change compared to the type on the 2.2 petrol.
-
That's been doing no filtering at all for some time, as its collapsed and the paper has come away at the base.
I few quick fire oil changes if that was my car.

:o :o
Clean it out and sell that on ebay ;D ;)

Ive seen several like that including my first 3.2 breaker, which was seized solid.
-
Seen a couple like that before. I don't think GM's 20,000 mile service interval helps.

Oh it does if you want a filter that is useless and a knackered engine :-\

That photo looks like someone made the cardinal and simple mistake of putting the oil filter in the wrong way round.

Only goes in one way.
-
WADR it only goes in PROPERLY one way. I know it clicks into place if its put in the RIGHT way but putting it in the WRONG way round squashes it up. (I know because when James did the first service on mine after I bought it that's what had been done to mine).
-
Woo. Must admit I've never forced a filter in to try it.
-
I don't think it was wrongly mounted. The hooks that locks it in to the cap where facing outwards. But I think that the other end facing the block were stuck to the face of the filter and It might have been twisted when I screwed the cap off. The filter sort of hanged in there and I had to pull it out.
But I'm not sure about that, filter was anyway very worn and old. Flow through it must have been minimal.

Jan, if its been in there a while (the oil), it may be worth doing some short oil changes (eg, every 750km for a couple of oil changes).
-
I've had two like that, astra 1.4 at 10k and omega dti at 2000 mls both aftermarket .
-
Aha, pattern filters?

I'm going on an vacation trip tomorrow and will drive about 2000km next week, I'll do a new change when I'm back.
Thanks for the advice :y

I've seen this as well, on a much less badly clogged filter. I reckon they can be crushed if they aren't on square when you replace the lid.

You've got to be pretty retardedham fisted to manage that surely :o
After all, the filter clips into the lid prior to refitting :-\

Boy am I glad mine uses the canister filters!

Can't get those the wrong way round, I suppose.
Although are the innards the same sort of thing?

Correct me if I'm wrong but aren't the hooks designed to lock into place INSIDE the holder, i.e. not showing?
-
Filter clips to the cap. Cap then screws into the housing :y Anyone fitting it backwards needs to get a desk job asap ;D
-
Only ever happened me using one brand .
-
Wow, that looks bad
-
I took one out of an astra diesel that looked exactly the same as that , bloke said he had just changed the oil and filter >:(

[/quote] Both were foster I should return them to the factors , never had a problem with mann ,bosch or any other brand.

Today I did another oil change as recommended with a new filter as well.
The filter came out looking clean and it was still attached to the cap.

No further worries about this I guess. Now just drive on to the next oil change...
Thanks
