I saw the Halfords 150 version of this come flying past me on the Northampton Road/A43 early the other morning. I would have stopped to pick it up but the case was clearly on fire. :o :o ;)
-
Almost worth getting as spare parts for the 150 piece, hnm, maybe not good value though. :y
If anyone is think of buying do it before 11 pm, as Halfords seem to have online order issues in the last hour of closing promotions. :y ;)

Any idea on quality ?
I've built up a half decent tool kit over the years BUT one thing I do need is a new ratchet
and some hex sockets because most of mine are multi spline and have rounded off over the years with abuse ::)
Tia :)

I picked up the 120pc set earlier today, as a get-me-by until I can get our insurance bloke to remove his thumb from his arse.
Like the new 150pc and 170pc, its missing vital parts, esp some of the spanner sizes.

And free delivery too. Halfords seem to be having some sort of panick attack, what with that and fully syn 5w30 at £10 http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_907231_langId_-1_categoryId_165581 (http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_907231_langId_-1_categoryId_165581)
I see some enterprising ebayers are selling the same halfords set online at £118 and the oil at £14 :o

That oil is no good to anyone here, oh sigh.... ::)
Unless your following 20k service intervals I suppose.

I'm sure there are a few. Does the manual mention that the auto box is a sealed for life unit? Or is that a dealer only gem? Or what about the original cam belt service interval of 80k miles that was reduced to 40k. Hmm? Oh, check out the fuse box map as well, while your there.
If you think 20k oil change intervals are a good idea then, well, ... I'll let you "read up" on that one too. ::)

I think the 150 piece was good value and used to have the most comprehensive range of tools for the omega. But some bright spark at Halfords has buggered it up by removing 18,16mm sizes, among others.
I like the layout of the newer box, for what good that is, smaller lighter boxes and less shipping costs for Halfords I guess.

I bought the latest 150 piece incarnation, despite having most of the tools already, because I wanted something I could chuck in the car and have everything I need to hand and laid out logically. Frankly, there is so much stuff missing that it no longer fulfils that role. If they are having to cut down the selection of tools, I'd much rather they gave you a complete selection of spanners rather than both conventional and ratchet spanners in some sizes and nothing at all in others, and a whole host of imperial sockets that you'll never need. It's a bit of a shame the selection of tools has clearly been made by a bean counter rather than someone who has actually worked on a modern car. :(

Theres still plenty of the Older style sets kicking around, most of them get thrown in the back with bits missing or used as spares, Got an old 150 one made up about 6 months ago for a friend of mine during a promotion, the manager was actually quiet pleased to make the set complete and get shot of it as it had no box, just make sure you have a picture of one and ideally the contents, think it really depends on the Store Manager and how helpful He wants to be.
Out come for my friend was an additional 10% off the £99 deal and some discount on some Oil,... did I just mention Halfords Oil, Oh dear. :-X

Their 5w30 fully synth is currently in our fleet. They were selling the stuff off so stupidly cheap that it made the trade club offers seem expensive.

Good point, they'd be far better removing the imperial "old mans tools" if they want to save cash, and maybe offer the imperial stuff as another set in another box under , maybe under another offer.

Bit strange my image seems to have gone missing, here it is again. It shows a 5W30 oil is perfectly acceptable for the 2.6. I don't know where all this other stuff about 20K, sealed unit, cam belt came from. I didn't raise it and none of it is in the owners manual I quoted from ???.

Its in the service book, Vx used the 5W30 synthetic oil as part of the 20K service regime.
I ran my Omega on it from day one but serviced at considerably more regular intervals than the 20K

The fully synth oils are fine (although their are some specific brands that a simply unsuitable for the V6 Omega, despite meeting the spec - Magnatec being a very obvious example, well known here).
There are 2 problems with the fully synth, thin oils:
1) Most of our Omegas have a good few miles under them. Thinner oils on such engines will either find ways to leak, or find a way past the rings to make a bid for the cats.
2) The marketing of them implies stupidly long service intervals, which is 'dangle berries'. The actual life is approx the same, only fully synth tends to not gradually degrade, but break down suddenly.
There is a less technical issue, cost (most of the time, though occasional offers are available), why pay more for something that is no better (for our needs) and lasts no longer.
We know what works really well without issue in all Omegas in UK style climates - an advantage of a forum like this - and that is GM's own semi 10W40. At £12 (inc VAT) for 5l, it also happens to be one of the cheapest available.
