Title: What's the going rate for garage work?
Post by: Gaffers on 23 July 2013, 15:24:25
Been quoted £60/hr inc VAT for a job on the Jag (a rather large job I don't want to do myself)  I have the parts already so the quote is just for the work alone.

Is this expensive or not?  I don't normally frequent garages but on this my hand is forced.

Around these parts, back street garages start around the 40 quid plus the dreaded VAT per hour

If you take a Merc to Mercedes, they'll relieve your wallet of £110 per hour!!

I stopped using my local independent about three years ago when I saw that he was charging £95 per hour for labour. Cheeky bastid.

Try Rees Bros (http://www.reesbros.co.uk/) around the corner from me Matt.

They did the suspension work on the Beemer for me last year for £45 per hour inc (I also supplied all the parts).
It's a proper old school garage, with proper old school mechanics, and a proper job done right first time.

I have a simple rule when it comes to Mechanics and their prices..... If it costs more than a case of beer, I'm getting my hands dirty!

£60 an hour is sort of reasonable ime. £45 is good rate . Nothing that cheap near me. :)

Actually, £60 is about as much as you can get away with before your into dealer rates.

My local Vx dealer charges £65 plus VAT......making £78.... :o :o :o

That's a lot of money for the services of a spotty 17 year old armed with a damp cloth. :(

About a month ago this is what I was quoted by a local independent garage ( not vx  ) This is labour only as I said I was getting the parts.

Oil and filter change, coolant flush and change, stat change, header tank change, cam gasket change, all filters and spark plugs...

£ 608.42  :o  :o  >:(

Needless to say I won't be taking my car to them  ::)

I got quoted £600ish to change the rear crank seal on mine :o apparently the cambelt was in the way, along with tbe waterpump.

When I pointed out that it was at most a 3 hour job, with a £20 part and was actually at the opposite end of the engine, the garage insisted that the quote was still valid ::)

Ended up going to a local gearbox specialist who charged £120 :y Would much prefer garages to be upfront and say 'sorry, but that's not a job were interested in doing' rather than going through the motions of producing a cowpoo quote >:( I wonder how many people fall for it though :-\

works the other way as well - was quoted two hours labour to change the rear bearing on mine  ;D ;D ;D

took him two days - I bunged him £200, and a 6-pack of grolsch  ::)
