hate to say this but its the way I feel at the moment.Firstlylet me say that I have all our cars insured at what now seems more money than its worth.Why let me tell you the other day my mum took her car for its mot and as always it passed (bmw full service history and she worked for a garage for years so the car never went without)any way arfter the mot she went shopping on her way to the shops gets hit head on by a uninsured driver.must add at least shes alright went to hospital and got the allclear but didn't get any details of names etc as she couldnd get out the car at first.The police were called so got a crime number so at least shes covered.Got in touch with the insurance today and the car that hit her was being test driven and the driver had no insurance the driver also seems to have given a false name and address to the police and to top it all of the registered owner of the car says he sold it 2 years ago but has no idea who to . Now mum has full comp but it has £350.acess and the car has been written of the car has been valued at £750 book value so she will get the difference £400.back now the good bit her insurance was £475 and only took out last month so when they pay out it will be cancelled which leaves her out of pocket and with no car as for the other driver I would already driving around in another pile of scrap. Rank over now to find another good small car for her.

Sorry to hear of your mums accident,but at least the important bit[your mum]is unhurt.Isn't it a sod though?You do everything by the book you stay legal,pay your dues and demands and finish up out of pocket all because someone else thinks it easier and a sight cheaper to break the law[and sadly in cases like this it usually is]it does make you wonder though why you actually bother to do things right!However like yourself I shall continue to do things the legal way because it's the right thing to do and in part due to the fact that that's the way I was brought up.If I did any other I would never be able to visit my parents grave and face them again!!

We all think about insurance as "what will it pay me if my car is damaged" .. there is another, very much more important aspect IMHO .... what will it pay out if I hit someone ...... and I don't mean fixing their car ..... what about fixing their "life" or what could be left of it ???
A friend of mine was unfortunate enough (and probably stupid enough as a mobile phone was involoved as well) to be the cause of a very serious accident that left the driver of the other vehicle paralysed from the waist down.
That person will never, ever walk, shit, wank or have sex again, and required major modification to both his home and his outlook on life. The costs so far, over the last 8 years are well over £250,000 and the prospect is anything up to a further £1,000,000 in medical fees, equipment and nursing costs - and that doesn't include the costs the Courts will, eventually, award for "pain and suffering" and boy has there been some.
Let alone the change to "lifestyle" for both the poor guy, but also his wife and children........
Now, who's paying for all that ??? If it wasn't for the Insurance company then my friend would be personally liable .. but as he doesn't have that sort of money, the poor, innocent party who has all the problems would have even more .....
THAT is the "true" reason for having insurance .. not getting an extra £50 for a bent lump of metal...... IMHO .. :(

Couldn't agree more - the loss of a lump "metal" is insignificant compared to the overall changes to that guy's, and his family's, lives.

thanks for the link very interesting reading .and mum seems ok which is what counts at the moment she says that she wont drive anymore but time will tell im sure

dnot want to upset any one but having seen over the years what I have seen cant disagree more with the above comment .As for driving while using a mobile its not as easy as we all think .Is just talking as bad as texting etc etc this is where the law needs to be looked at and made more clear as not all cases are cut and dry .I personaly would treat making a call ,ie dialing a number or texting the same as drink driving 12 months ban min , just talk not sure about that one
