Title: One advantage of getting old, but Oh! the minefield.
Post by: Jusme on 30 July 2013, 13:12:10
Car insurance due, renewal from Churchill £210 + + & +. £320. onto comparison sites, fill in applications most carefully, modification? LPG. Best quote £147. Phone insurer. Standard car no modifications sir. No I have Dual fuel. Eh, wassat? LPG and petrol of course. One moment please.
That will be a further £32 sir bringing your total to £179. No thank you, goodbye.
Next on list 'OneCall'. I have an online quote from you at £164 does that include LPG? No sir, I can see you entered it on the application but it wasn't included in the quote. So how much more will it be? It brings your total to £174 sir. I'll take it thank you. Quite pleased as courtesy car, legal, personal effects and get you home is included. Ah! The benefits of being old...  :(

If you included the details in the quote request an they quoted a price they are legally obliged to uphold it for the time period given.  I had this with the AA, their mistake, not mine, their responsibility.  They tried to get it back the year after by adding £300 to the quote but I was ready for that and switched to someone else for much less :y

After seeing the original post, I thought I'd have a play with the comparison websites...

I'm 42, 13+ yrs licence, 2yrs NCB, 6pts IN10, 1 claim + mrs egg  :-X yrs old, provisional, no claims, no pts.

3.0 Lexus GS300 - £1100!

Played about with changing my NCB, removing points, removed MrsEgg (I wish  ::) ) - reduced to 950  >:(

Put all the correct details in, then decided to store the car in my mum's drive, instead of my own (400yds away, but different town, different postcode)

£450!

So I can be a shit driver at my mums; or for double the price I can be a perfect driver 2 minutes walk away  >:(

I NEVER EVER should have moved out of my parents, it's been downhill ever since - I'm not surprised my
three grown up kids don't want to leave home  >:(

It was the same story for my other half when she was living at home - insurance quote at her mum's address in Solihull was ~£650, literally around the corner at her Nan's (two roads closer to Birmingham) she was uninsurable..

She moved in with me in Bracknell and her insurance halved. Who knew Bracknell was such a haven of safety! ;D

I did a quote with LV and they were the dearest  ??? God knows how much it would have been with the V6  :-\ Maybe im wrong in thinking these insurance companies charge what they like , thats the V8 put off for another year  :D ;D

Cheapest and best cover i got was with the Co op when i had the Omega so will give them a call ..

When I did a comparison between a 2.0 Renault RX4, a lexus GS300 (V6), a 3.0 MV6 omega estate, and a lexus LS400 (V8) - here's how the figures came back:

RX4 - £1450
MV6 - 1100
GS300 - 1100
LS400 - 900

reckon if I found a 12L W24 (4 straight 6s side by side), they'd pay *me* to insure it  ::)

The reason we stay with LV is that they were previously Frizzel, they offered very good rates for civil servants/public employees which both of our jobs fall under.LV  have continued this so we get an 80% ncb, which makes our insurance very reasonable for 3 vehicles (£456.00) we also have a guaranteed ncb which means regardless of  the amount of incidents we can never lose it. We have had to claim in the past & it has never affected our renewal premium ,plus we are both nearly 60 years of age which helps, also includes Britannia Rescue &  hire cars  etc..

Well i popped over father emd's and he was talking about how his insurance renewal had gone up this year  >:( Another scam  >:(
He rang his insurance , told them he could get it £50 cheaper elsewhere and what do you know they said oh we will match it then  ::) Wonder how many just accept the renewal quotes , a licence to print money if you ask me  :(

Forgot to say in my OP. Phoned Churchill to cancel 20 minutes before insurance ran out, bloke on the phone says, 'why do you want to cancel'? Too expensive. What other quote have you had? £170. 'I think I might be able to match that, just a minute please'. Stupid music playing. Stupid bloke returns. OK sir, your renewal is £320. ( I told you that?) I can do it for £250, how does that sound? About £80 more than the matched offer you suggested, thanks for your help, goodbye. Went onto comparison site, got a quote from Churchill.. £233???? Got my new documents through from them today ??? Oh. Dear!   ;)

Get yourself a free bus pass - find mine very useful in getting discounts on restaurant/pub food, and cinema tickets ;D ;D ;D
Not tried it on buses yet - they tend to only run on a couple of days a week round here :)
