"We're just damn glad to live in a free country where you can have a gun if you want to."
Yep. Until someone slightly unbalanced happens to have a bad day it's all roses.

legally dont you still have to be "vetted" before you can have a permit to carry fire arms?
I think there's seperate rules, one allowing the posession of firearms on display in the home and one that can allow a person to "free-carry"

depending on which state you're in you usually have to wait 24hrs to pick up the gun, but if you are a US citizen you can get a gun. A permit to carry is another thing, that requires vetting but gun ownership doesnt :o

I was in Atlanta a few years ago and went into an "outdoors" shop (think Millets but about the size of a B&Q Warehouse). You could wander round and chuck boxes of ammo in your trolley along with your fishing line, maggots, etc.
There was a counter with guns behind and a rather lardy attendant looking after it but plenty of firearms were just lying on the counter. Would have been straightforward to grab a handful of ammo and a piece off the counter and bob's your uncle.
I guess if they're being given away gratis you wouldn't bother though. ::)
