Title: Something for Guy & Classic car fans
Post by: tunnie on 03 August 2013, 10:40:47
Spotted this in Tesco car park near work, never heard of "Humber" before, had to Google it. Defunct in 1931!

Nice to see its still in regular use!

Humber itself might have gone in 1931, but the Humber/Hilman cars were built up to the 70's

The last Humber Sceptre was little more than a 'tarted up' Hillman Minx/Hunter.

The glory days had were long gone by then. :'( :'(

The Car in Mr Tunnie's picture is a rare 'A' reg.

By my reckoning that makes it a 1963 model.

The reg is certainly 1963  :y  :y  :y

As you say, suffix A reg's aren't common because not every local council used the new A reg plates & continued to use the old style formats.

My Dad used to have a Humber Imperial, the first car I could remember as a kid. Bench seats front & rear - 6 seater, leather everywhere. Had the selecta-ride thingamy too, picnic tables, privacy electric glass to separate front from rear. Was the loveliest most comfortable car with a big 3.0 straight 6 engine that would pull anything & was so simple to work on. It was built like a tank too, I remember once dad reversing into a concrete bollard and crushing it, there was hardly a scratch on the car  :o :D
I also remember it pulling a huge horsebox out of a ditch, thinking Nah........ it'll never drag that out, but it did and made it look easy too.

I cried when it finally went to the scrapyard in the sky  :'( :'( :'(

I had a Mk1 Sceptre[a B reg]back in the early eighties.Mk1s were-I think-1500s,a slight restyle brought the Mk2 with a 1725 motor and the Mk3 was a badge engineered Hunter.Dad had Super Snipes from the late fifties through to '67 when production had finished,8 kids, dad and mum used to go on holiday in them[and they were all saloons]if we'd had an accident it'd have been carnage!!

And older friend of mine still has a A110 Westminster in his garage,1964 car which he has had since it was 3 years old, sadly beyond reasonable help now I fear although the interior is still excellent  :y

I used to drive a farmer friend around in his Super Snipe, a lovely comfortable car, but handled like a marshmallow tank. I was running a Mk1 Consul at the time, which handled so much better. 8)

Correct..... :y :y

I had a 65 model in the late 70's as a yoof, fitted a merc Grill on it that, like the Merc lifted with the bonnet, looked like a Roller at the time........ :D :D

Managed to blow the big ends on it though, 4th gear with overdrive, pushing it as hard as I could, just hit the red line and 'tinkle tinkle' replaced the shells myself too, aged about 19 iirc............ :y :y
