I bought a Pela 6000 specifically for SWMBO's Smart that doesn't have a sump drain plug. I also used it yesterday to do my sister-in-law's Astra, because GM, in their infinite wisdom made the drop down flap on the lower engine cover, that big, that it hits the ground way before you can get to the drain plug - intended for use when the car is in the air on a 4 poster lift ..... and not ramps.  ???

How long does it take to empty a Mig sump then? ???

I'm not exactly sure how long it took to remove 5 litres from the Astra .... you set it off & then get on with something else. It's not long though ..... 10 mins maybe  :-\ :-\

And on an Omega it'd be best to empty the Pela part way through, otherwise you'll end up with oil getting sucked up into the vacuum pump ..... like I did yesterday - there must've been a bit still in the bottle when I started.  ::)

I prefer to drain properly but use the sucker on mostly Vag cars because there undertrays are a pain in the ass once 5-6 years old :y

I can't say for every car, but on her Smart, there's bugger all left in the sump after the sucker has been used.

I've checked on golf's and A4's with 1.9pd lump and it drains them completely, later 2.0Td's leaves about a litre behind so have to drop there trays and do it proper :-\

Often used on boat engines due to space restrictions, some even have inbuilt pumps specifically for servicing purposes :y

Whether a good idea or not on cars however, I am less convinced :-\

I think this ideal for the use i need it for and for those that overfill the sump oil a great way to extract a little  :y Ill stick to the conventional oil change  :y

1.8 Vectra Cs don't even need jacking to change the oil...

But on some cars .... SWMBO's Smart & S-in-L's Astra & my Merc, the oil filter is accessable from the top of the engine bay  :y

Same as the family Corsa, which you can get at the sump plug without the need to jack it up. :y

Just thinking if its a car thats not had an oil change for a while it may not get all the shit out , at least with poppin the drain plug all the crud will drop out . Dont think the pump would get all the crud out  :-\

I have an electric one (needed for a boat engine with no access).  It is useful for a no mess oil change on a car as long as the oil is quite hot.  Last time I removed the drain plug afterwards just to be sure and nothing came out, not even a drop.  You still have to remove the filter of course but now mine is back to spin on that is a joy compared to the paper cartridge.

I think if an engine is designed for a sucker, you'll have little problem with them.  Other engine designs may be less suitable.

In all cases, if the oil servicing has been abused (ie, idiots have serviced to manaufacturer specs), I'd be inclided to drop the sump and clean it all up.

Give him a 'good hiding' if he comes near your car again, Mr EMD.

Feral kids are everywhere these days. :-\

did a quick oil change on the Ford today (drained normally via the drain plug hole). had a pan full of oil (about 4L) and I was in the garage and thought 'hmmm ive got a pan full of oil sitting right next to a oil vac pump... lets see how long it will take'

15 mins later it had got about a litre  :o :o :o :o :o :o

You need a better pump, mine will do about a litre a minute with hot oil.

to be honest mate it was a cheap one and I don't want to do it this way myself anyway unless I had no choice :)

Anyone tempted to buy the Screwfix spherical one, avoid at all costs, I bought one to use on SWMBO's Jazz, and returned it after one aborted attempt to use it. DO NOT BUY ONE!!!

I've never tried the manual ones but have heard bad reports about them.  I can understand why, I have a manual pump and that is useless.  The electric ones are quite good like this one http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/370857766088 (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/370857766088) . Only £20 less than half the screwfix manual one.   Being electric you just leave them running,  doesn't take long as I recall.  They work fine with quite hot used engine oil but don't try them on unfiltered oil with particles in eg the sludge in a rusty diesel tank knackered my last one in a minute.  Filthy filtered engine oil seems to be fine though.
