Title: The Dreaded Day Cometh
Post by: Albert1 on 23 May 2008, 11:41:22
Ladies and Gents,

We all know the Omega population of the world isn't getting any younger (the cars, not the owners  lol).  Just out of curiosity, those of you who think you probably will change to something younger in the next couple of years, what are you considering changing to?

I'm casually toying with the idea of either a Volvo S60 T5 (will miss the interior space of the Mega though) or a Vectra with the 3.0 V6 diesel engine (would never touch the old-shape veccy with a bargepole, but the mk2 is somewhat better. Did used to like the idea of the 3.2 GSi, but road tax will hammer it soon).  I know, I know, they're front wheel drive, and I can't say I've missed understeer and torque steer since I sold my Rover 620 turbo, but might just have to put up with it.

Your thoughts - on what you would buy - are welcomed please.

Sticking to my guns on RWD, I went for a Merc, though you could also consider a Jag (apparently they are quite reliable these days).

If RWD is not an issue for you, then I drove a Mk-II Mondeo (2007) for a week on some dusty roads and the car is very very good to drive, though the interior build quality is not as good as the Japanese or the Germans, with bits falling off al over the place (OK, so it was a rental...).

Vectra V6? Donnow... I have a feeling the the V6 engine is shoe-horned into place on the Vectra, which will make DIY difficult and dealer servicing expensive, can anyone comment on that? But a 4-pot 2.2 should be nice.

I've just changed the '99 Omega for exactly those reasons ...  to a '51 Omega !! ( I was looking at a '53 but this one kept saying "Buy me, buy me !!" )

Problem solved for a good few years I hope    :)

A new shape Merc C-class 3.2 CDi would be lovely...but I'm loathed to make that size hole in my savings  lol.

just done that very change for that very reason.

My first choice was a very late very well specced 3.2 Omega without paying silly money. That failed and i ended up with the Jag.

3 weeks in i cant fault it  - fantastic roadholding and acceleration. And its 4 Wheel drive ( if you buy a big one) Just this morning i realised you cant actually hear the engine at all  :o and yes it was running

But i dont plan on it staying too long....then i will be on that merry go round again.

Word of advice if you can stick the concern over the transfer boxes and the stigma of Ford and the lack of "some" gadgets it can actually be cheaper than the equivelant Omega !

RWD all the way for me, but would consider 4WD.

Driven a fair ammount of Front wheel drive stuff in the past as I had a car valeting service and the only one that actually made me think twice about ever going back to it was a Honda Prelude with 4WS

I was warned about the steering as I collected and was mega impressed.  Especially when I reversed it from one side of a 4 post ramp to the other side witout using a forward.

Been faithfull to RWD ever since.  :y :y

I love the older BMW's, we had a 535 at work all black, decrommed.

He fitted a 6-2-1 Exhaust on it with what I reckon was the 1st ever proper big bore system I ever saw, it repalced the  twin pipes for a 3" to 4" stainless sytem that retained the central position in the centre of the car.

It became so powerfull he couldnt keep traction on the road evem after upgrading all the suspention.

He went on to have the modded big valve heads and the fuel system upgrated.  Pirelli P7R's that completely filled the arches.

That gave him the traction in the end.  The down side he went on the tear the propshaft apart, and when that was fixed the power tore the body work apart thar held the rear suspention on.

Bloody awsome car, but then the guy didnt have a budget as it was all put through the business.

He also had an E-type convertable and even had an Escort BDG rally car that he won his his class with in the Lombard RAC that year.

Money buys some wonderfull cars, unfortuneately I can only dream of them.

My bonus though, was with them being company cars I got to ride in most of them when I was younger and once I passed my test I even got to drive a few of them.

Ah well, 40 winks overs, the good old days eh!, back to reality.   ;D ;D :y

Age of a vehicle doesn't worry me. Might be tempted for a LPG V6 Omega unless I become very sensible and get something boring which is cheap to tax and insure. :-/
