No I do not believe they are. It is just that with the price of petrol / diesel so high, it is making it very profitable for the criminally minded to drive away without paying. ;)
-
and if the stinger jams in the upright position, with a full forecourt of paying customers, how much abuse will the attendant take?
i actually think its a good idea, there's just always pros and cons

From the article:
"More people are attempting it with the high cost of fuel and we have been getting at least one a week. But since the notices about the spikes went up last month, there haven't been any drive-aways."
So no need to actually install the £10,000 system, just put up the warning signs then? :-?
-
Just put up some signs and drill some little holes in the Tarmac ;D ;D ;D

Then the poor sod they make the mistake with gets 4 new tyres and probably sued for inconvieniance depending on where and what the persons business was/is.
They just cant take the law into thier own hands, it's like Spike Milligan shooting the guy in the butt all over again.

"Petrol Station Stingers"
::)....it would seem were all getting 'stung' at petrol stations these days! >:(
-
Driving off without paying could, of course, be a genuine mistake. ::) I once did it, years ago, but realised my mistake within the first 100 yards & returned to pay for it. The garage owner said they'd have caught up with me sooner or later though. :-[

Won't be long before a set of 4 tyres is cheaper than a tank of petrol anyway. >:(

I once had some chap try and charge me £5 for a full tank of petrol in my motorbike, which came to just over £15. I asked him if he was absolutely sure he wanted £5 and when he looked slightly puzzled I told him that I had put in three times that amount. Turns out he was looking at the wrong pump!!
Iif someone is intent on not paying for petrol, they are just as likely to drive out across the pavement and avoid the stingers altogether.
-
Whether this particular approach is right or wrong, it is about time the garages did something themselves to prevent drive offs instead of relying on the police to bring the offenders to book after the fact.

Absolutely. And, let's face it, they could make it a thing of the past overnight if they adopted the "pay at pump" style stations you see in France.
The fact is, they choose to force you to get out of the car and pay on foot in the hope that you'll buy some of the carp they have in display in the shop, so I don't have a great deal of sympathy. >:(

I'm not so sure which thieves are worse........the thieves that drive off without paying or the oil companies. Hold on, the winner is.............The Government!! >:(

I went to the cashier at tesco and said "pump 2 please" and she said "scuse me?" and I repeated myself in a somewhat confused manner saying "pump 2 please, the big blue vauxhall" and she said "it's been paid for, that guy's at pump 2", she then pointed to a guy, as we both watched him drive off in his own car... from pump 8!!
lucky for her, we had put the same amount in!

I wonder what would have happened had he just filled up & you'd just put £30 in. Who would be out of pocket, Tesco or you?
