Evening all
Having a bit of bother sorting my daughters Ka insurance out and would like your input.
Last week she told me she had received her renewal and they wanted to shaft her for £167 per month. (She's 19 and past her test less than a year ago). I said I'd have a look on compare websites and on compare the market I found a deal with Diamond girls insurance for £81 per month. She didn't have the funds to renew there and then as she doesn't get paid till the 13th August so I saved the quotes until she was ready.
I had put the renewal date as 11th August which has obviously passed, so I've gone back and made the start date today, they are now saying it will be £106 per month, and that's the lowest! None anywhere near £81!!!
So I thought I'd change the start day to tomorrow and its now dropped down to £89 pm, if I start it on Friday it drops further to £81, then £79 for a Saturday start. That's about as low as it goes, but that's still £950 annually for a car worth maybe £500!!!
Wtf is going on? What difference does it make what day it starts? It's still a one year policy?
Your thoughts please people, or is this a commonly known thing.
Thanks as always
Wayne

Put it down for next month and it will be free. ;D ;D ;D
Seriously the kids today get hammered and the oldies that have protected no claims and have 3 accidents each year get it cheaper :o ::) have you tried sheilas wheels they can be cheaper for women. :y

Not since the law changed a couple of months ago! :y

have had the same thing with my car got a quote saved it and it had changed a couple of days later told that even a saved quote can change on a daily rate. But use the same sites as you have got me meer cat and then the silly thing my 18 year old daughter just passed her test so no ncd third party fire and theft driving a 1.8 escort £625 per year don't ask me how we have 4 cars in the house and insure them all with Admiral so get discount but hers is nearly as good as mine ?
-
Well that's purchased now. Silly thing is I went direct to Diamond and they want £93 a month with no extras like key cover and legal protection, but going through the meerkats it's £79 with these things already added.
Seriously, where do they get their prices from. I realise there's a million variables but can't they just have a bit more uniformity. One company wanted £8900 a year!!!!
-
My daughter (24yr old) paid just over £900 for her 1100cc 52 plate Seicento last year (Admiral ) this year they wanted a whole shed load more ??? ??? even though she now had a years NCD to her name. She went to Hastings & insured it for a little over £500. I didn't think that that was too bad. (both premiums paid for in one go)

Insurance "now" is more expensive than insurance "next week".
they quote lower, cos they know you have chance to shop round.

mates 19 yr old son pays 800 for landy disco ;D quoted 1900+ for corsa ;D ;D ;D
-
800 for a 4l V8 lexus
1400 for a 1.9 renault laguna ???
-
That is silly for such a small car. My 19 year old payed about £850 fully comp for a full Irmscher kitted 2.0 Astra about 6 months ago. My 17 year old on the other hand has just paid £2300 for his first Astra 1.6 8 valve.
I think 99% of it is there age and location, not the car. I have found out to my cost it is not worth looking around for tiny engined cars as as soon as they have been driving for 5 minutes they want something bigger and better (understandable)
-
Location definitely is an important factor as it's normally £100 extra here in London.

Just done the wife's car changed from 1.4i Rover to a 1.1 Pug 206....same year (Y reg) Rover/Pug was £220 per year fully loaded(monthly), for the renewal swift wanted £326 despite 7 years ncb! (although they had insured the pug for same price) and that was with £350 excesses.
Note: bought the Pug for £130 as a run around and cheaper tax.
So hunted around and got it for £186 (fully loaded) with £0 voluntary and £100 compulsory!
The reason swift gave for the hike was that the pug 206 is more inclined to be stolen as it's a desirable car for joyriders......whatever!

typical quote for similar aged and experienced daughter on the mv6 last year?
£10k the lowest quote i had was £4.7k
WTF???
her 1.6 astra £1500 ,
down to about £1200 this year.

Insurance is .. well, if we didn't have to pay it you'd probably call it a mug's game!
As some know my other half is a fair bit younger than me - to add her as a second driver on the Omega policy, which currently costs me £350 a year with Admiral, added another zero to the end of the price!
But doing a quote earlier today for me as primary and her as additional driver on a 2010 BMW 520d Touring? £500. With another Admiral group company..
Certainly made me confused.com!
-
Apparently when they quote high i.e in the thousands they dont want your business!
Or if you accept, then they laugh all the way to the bank.......car insurance companies .....why cant they be made to be transparent?
-
As mentioned by BigEgg if you quote for today the computer thinks that you have forgotten to reinsure and you are desperate, hence the price increase. If you purchase a few weeks in advance and pay in full you get the best deals IME.

Not entirely true although it happens >:(,see my post re her pug, this was done at 7pm (12th) with insurance expiry due at midnight.
Swift's renewal came a month ago!
And I did forget until I got the ear bashing :'(
Happy now though ;D and despite Admiral's claims it aint always cheaper to insure both cars together! :y

Never once have I managed to get an Admiral multicar quote that beat insuring each car individually...with Admiral!
-
Your right. :)....and they claim to be transparent :o....yea right! :-\
Also begs the question if you have two cars in your own name, why does the NCD only apply to one?.....Is it the car or you that has the NCD.......mmm
Ask this because both were with swift and they allowed (to gain business last year) for my NCD to be used because cars are in my name......now hers has moved and they sent the NCD through claiming that I only have one lot.....so now when I come to reinsure mine in October it seems I am ..... :'(

Please correct me if I'm wrong but I'm sure I spoke to a lady from America last year and she told me that it's not the person that's insured but the car. She had emigrated over there and was amazed that a) her son could learn at 16 and b) that it made no difference to her premium when he was added.
Maybe I'm brainwashed by uk insurance but how on earth could that be viable. You let a teen drive a 5.0 v8 surely there's a much greater risk that it won't have a happy ending?
Quite happy to be corrected on this but she had no cause to lie to me.

I'd heard this too - and judging by the state of some of the cars. no MOT either
I don't think much to your example tho.
Thats's probably the smallest engine you can get in merkia. ;D
-
"it's not the person that's insured but the car."
but I would think that the person must have something to do with it,example if I put down licensee (pub)....wallop!!! same as unemployed (not as bad as licensee)......when I was a "Government Officer".....insurance tumbled, same car, same person, different job!
I know they changed the law now,but women used to get lower premiums....worked when I used to put HID as main driver and me as the second....I think they take it all into consideration, must do a green L is more unless you add them to your insurance??

I went to Canada many moons ago as I have family there and my uncle told me there was no yearly mot. What they had was a very stringent test that your car has to pass before you sell it. So you keep your car for 20 years and its a death machine!
