Title: OBD or not OBD2?
Post by: SandBoy on 16 August 2013, 14:06:17
Hiya

Thinking of buying one of these code readers,as the engine management light is permanently on and it's in for MOT on Monday.
Although the car seems to be running alright it's 2.2CD manual (51 plate) 2001? is it OBD2?
Also need it to sort out and clear a picasso with lights still on(airbag and child seat) and find out why the blooming speedo dosnt work (sensor already changed) and maybe her pug (if & when lights come on!!)

Will it do the job and clear the lights and reset?

Cheers.

Should be being a 2.2 2001, all the 2.6 and 3.2 where ODB2, having said that they did make some 2.2 in 2000, before the 2001 all petrol cars are ODB2 thingy.

ODB2 will only clear EML light, fairly sure you need a Tech2 chat or the Airbag light, having said that I took a 3.2 ex plod for an MOT a couple of months ago, not knowing that the Airbag Light Bulb was missing, passed the MOT with a verbal advisory for that as the MOT man said still not the system yet ,ie, Airbag Light On = Fail, Airbag light Bulb not working = Advisory.

Thanks Guys :y

Its the Engine Light that is on the 2.2, thats in for MOT, want it off in case they fail it? ???
Plus need to know why it's still on when everything has been sorted (I hope!) :-\

The Picasso (used as a van!) passed its MOT,exactly the same (I removed the bulbs! ;D).....but need to find out why they are on (bulbs back in ::)) and why the blooming speedo not working! >:(

2.2 petrol is EOBD compliant, so ODBII compliant.

EOBD only really covers engine. And the fact the EML is on means you have a fault that needs fixing.

These new bluetooth OBD2 readers look remarkably cheap  www.ebay.co.uk/itm/221249319122 (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/221249319122).  I'm sure they are a total waste of £4.15 but I'd be pleased to hear why.

Alternatively at twice the price www.ebay.co.uk/itm/350800985035 (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/350800985035)

Those bluetooth ones are ideal for a quick code read.

Can run em off a laptop, or more handily via an android phone
for iphones you need the wifi versions, at double the cost (which also run on pc or android)

I keep one in the car, always handy if a light come on out and about if a firend / colleague etc needs a hand.

They do a little more than code reading...but not much :y

Thanks Guy's for the input.

It has been on for ages, even before the engine was changed (2+ years ago by you know who!!),It didnt go out then and we have since done the head etc recently and still on!
She is running sweet as though.
Going to get one of those readers and determine what's what, fixing it will be another matter!!.

is it an MOT fail if the light is on?

I have got a slightly more expensive one (about £15 IIRC) and I use it with scanmyopel on my android phone. At the moment it reads codes, shows live data, stores logs and can reset codes in the engine, ABS and gearbox ECUs of my 2.6 V6. (It has a button for the SRS ECU but that isn't working yet.)

Code reader :) came, plugged it in and no code! ???
Read through the instructions again, reconnected, turned ignition on and light went out :-[
Dont know  what has happened?......Goldie running fine and engine light hasnt come back on,except when first turning ignition on.
Code reader reads no faults. :y
Now that has got me worried that a fault exists.....maybe I have just cleared the light or am I just being over worried?...mmmm
