Title: Nuisance phone calls
Post by: cam2502 on 22 August 2013, 15:39:57
Every day we must get 5 or 6 calls, sometimes a number is shown, sometimes not, but the weird thing is no one ever speaks!
I 1471-ed the last number but it was permanently engaged.
What's going on here? I'm beginning to wonder if its some kind of scam where someone somewhere is making money just by me answering the phone.
Bloody annoying!! >:( >:(
Wouldn't be so bad if it was someone trying to flog me something, at least then I could politely tell them where to go  ;D
Anyone else have similar experiences? And how do I stop them ringing ?

Auto-diallers.. Imagine a big call centre full of low paid drones. The machine constantly dials numbers at a pre-determined rate and, when answered, tries to connect the call it just made with an available operator - many are configured far too aggressively and when it tries to find a free operator there isn't one, so you just get an empty line (if you wait long enough a person will probably appear).

Try the TPS but that only protects you (IIRC) from completely unsolicited calls - if the caller got your number from something you signed up for (say, for example, you forgot to check the little 'Don't resell my details' box on your AA membership) then the TPS does nothing for you at all..

Incidentally I've sometimes seen 'call blocking' boxes for sale that go between the phone and the wall - I assume they block all 'unknown' calls and probably a predefined list of known cold-callers..

..I've never been brave enough to try one just in case it blocked something useful (like that time I ignored a call from a number I don't know for a fortnight and it turned out to be the bank telling me I'd forgotten to pay my credit card bill  :-[ :-[ )

We are signed up to TPS and our number is withheld and we don't appear in the phone book. We get very few calls. If we do my wife (answers phone) she demands to know the company and how they got the number in a rather forceful way.  The caller is usually petrified and apologises and goes away. We never hear from the same company twice.

Just checked the TPS site, it appears we are already registered with them. Must ask swmbo when she gets home from work because I haven't heard of them  :-\
Anyway, TPS say they have our number, but I still get calls. What's the next step? Note the numbers that show on my phone and report it?

We leave the answer phone on all the time, if it is someone I want to talk to I will pick up the phone, if they leave a message I will get back to them. Anything else we simply ignore, don't even bother with 1471 :y.

At home we just program all numbers we know into the phone and set a tone for them, anything else just gets a different ring tone. So we answer based on that.

That Truecall thing is more expensive than about a set of 4 cordless phones  :o

I may have this wrong but i think that TPS only applies to UK call centres. :-\

It does, and any international calls will still come through.  Same with the BT "no number given" blocking facility (at a price of about £6.50 per month); Internationally generated calls will still get through. ;)

The next step is to ignore the effin thing if you don't recognise the number. We had this for about three weeks, just after we joined sky ::). I ignored them and they stopped calling.
It helps that my ringtone is a spot of Vivaldi at volume '1'.

Buy new phones...

You can block by category, international, withheld, not available, payphone, or 10 individual numbers....

Given us back our peace and quiet!

Remember that TPS is an industry body run by the industry that its claiming to protect you from. Hence, not really much use.

In addition, it doesn't cover international pests, recorded announcement calls, or those "survey calls" which are the usual sales calls, but if they start off claiming its a survey, they can get away with it.

I've had a few recently, latest was an ambulance chaser asking about a car accident I had 4 years ago, stating that I could claim for this that & t'other. It was the same company that tried the same thing a few months back who I sent off with a flea in their ears.

So, I had some fun with em this time - they keep annoying me so I waste their time. Conversation went something like......

Rep "I'm ringing about your accident"
Me "Really? What accident?"
Rep "The one you had in your Land Rover 4 years ago"
Me "Oh that"
Rep "You can still claim for your injuries you know, can I take some details from you so we can process the claim?"
Me "If you wish"
Rep "What happened"
Me "Well, this woman ran into the back of my Land Rover"
Rep "Were you moving at the time?"
Me "No, I was stationary"
Rep "What was the damage to the car?"
Me "A complete Write-off, Rear wing, bumper, Axle"
Rep "Where you injured at all?"
Me " Erm...... no, not really"
Rep "Where you wearing your seatbelt"
Me "No"
Rep "Oh, you should really wear your seatbelt"
Me "I'll bear that in mind next time"
Rep "So getting back to the accident, are you sure you were ok?"
Me "Yeah, it was a bit of a shock though"
Rep "I bet it was"
Me "It made me spill me Frosties"
Rep "Eh?"
Me "I was eating me breakfast at the time"
Rep "You was eating your breakfast"
Me "Yeah, I don't find that unusual at 08:15 in the morning"
Rep "Oh right ok, so you weren't injured then?"
Me "No, nearly choked on me cereal thought" (thought this might up the stakes a bit)
Rep "Really, what happened?"
Me "Well I'd just woke-up, got dressed and went downstairs, I was hungry, so I thought I'd get some breakfast. I poured some Frosties in a bowl, added milk & went into the living room and sat down to eat em. Next minute There was a loud knock at the door, which made me jump, I nearly ended up with the spoon up me nose and had milk all over me lap.
Rep "I'm sorry I don't understand?"
Me "Why?"
Rep "What's that got to do with the accident"
Me "Whats what got to do with the accident?"
Rep "You eating your breakfast at home"
Me" Well thats where I was at the time."
Rep "I thought you said you were in the car?"
Me "Nope, you said I could claim for the accident I had? Never said anything about being in the car at the time"
Rep "Erm.......Where you not in the car at the time?"
Me "No, I was sat in my house, eating breakfast, you never asked if I was in the car, it was parked up on the road"
Rep "Why you wasting my time?
Me "Because you're wasting mine AGAIN!!! Why don't you check you records before making time wasting calls!!!!
Rep .........................Click......Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

I had a very amusing conversation with someone from Lloyds once .. he was very offended when I suggested that, for all I know, he could be someone trying to steal all my money.. ;D

Some years ago that actually did happen to me. Got a very legitimate sounding call, the guy knew a lot of stuff. I can't recall exactly what he asked me. This was before Chip'n Pin.

£9,000 on my credit card over a number of transactions. This amount was way over my limit so they wrote out cheques paying into the card account. The card company didn't wait for cheques to clear before crediting the card account, so the fraudsters were able to keep going. Then the cheques started bouncing and the card company didn't believe that I did not write the cheques.

It all got sorted out eventually, but for a while I was a high credit risk with some very serious and nasty letters from the bank and the card company  :(

Now, I just never ever EVER discuss things with anyone who calls.

So another phone call, and this time there was actually a person speaking.... Who ended up swearing at me!! Simply because I intimated that ringing me at 8.45pm at night, and waking my baby, didn't make me very happy.

Thing is the only number that appeared on the phone was 07. And after 1471-ing that was the only number. Where will this be from? Abroad? Call centre?
