Title: Rear Brake Overhaul.

Evening all,

The time has come to finally overhaul the rear brakes as the handbrake when raised is nigh on touching the roof lining!

I'm curious what parts I'd need apart from the obvious handbrake cable/s, shoes... Are there any others bits I'd need?

Would anyone happen to have a parts list with part No's?

I've found the thread for the rebuild, its just I'm not sure on what parts I need to completely overhauled them.

Don't want to sound awkward, but it really needs examining first.

For instance If the hand brake shoe linings have come away, or are worn away, that would account for the high hand brake. So then, you may not need the cable.

Bloody awkward job adjusting the drums IMO. Poxy little hole, and working out which way the adjusters go from off and near side means I always turn the damn thing the wrong way at some point.

So I can see where your coming from. Ordinarily, properly adjusted new shoes is enough ime.

Cheers for the reply Chris, to be honest I'll prob just replace the hubs, discs, shoes, spring set & handbrake cable.... No messing about lol

Ah really? So the bearings come complete with the hub/disc assembly then?

Wheel bearings are separate, estate ones being bigger than saloon ones. Rear disc and hand brake drums are one and the same, pads are all the same, but being vented, you'll need be sure that the retaining kit is the correct one. Shoes are the same across the board. Handbrake mechanism pulls apart as per the guide. Handbrake cable is fiddly, as you need to drop the heatsheilds for access :y

When you fit the cable, adjust it from the handbrake end so that it just holds, then after a couple of weeks or so, adjust the wheel ends. That gives the cable a chance to bed in :y

Removing the hub just to service the brakes is making things really difficult! And you will probably need to replace the bearings.

The handbrake is fiddly, but doable with everything in place.

I'd only replace the cables if they are stretched beyond adjusting the brakes effectively. That usually happens because some idiot ignored good practice and only adjusted the cable and not the shoes first. This has been standard procedure for decades, so there is no excuse.

I had this prior to my MOT. I stripped the brakes down to find hardly any wear on them!.....it was just the hand brake cable that needed taking up under the car.

I was lucky as had it on my brothers four poster ramps but just removed the heat shields to gain access to the adjuster and used a long extension and short extension on knuckles to gain access and adjust them up. Saved me a fortune in parts and the brakes are brilliant now.

So I would defiantly give it an inspection first prior to buying everything !
