My daughter (10) volunteered to buy the paper (she likes going to the local shops) and was told that she was too young, so I went to Tescos onstead and they say no problems.
Very odd - anyone else ever had this?
-
Never heard of that one before, I am certain there is no law against it. :)
-
sounds absolutely ridiculous to me. I wonder how many people on here remember going to the shops for mum or dad when we were little kids to get the daily paper, and getting sweets with the change!
-
Mew one on me... I suppose they might have moral issues with selling the Sport/Star type papers, as they are pretty close to porn IMO but I don't think there's any law on it.

I did think about calling in (they are nearer home than Tescos) and metioning it - but I am just boycotting them instead.

Just a Sunday Express - no porn in it just a M.O.R. type paper which is an interesting and easy read.
-
would be interested to hear what reason they would give, sounds bizarre :-/

I'm not, can't stand NOTW or Sunday Mirror, they get me angry.
Just want an easy read with both real news and a bit of fluffy stuff, Sue likes the mag.

It`s not one of those silly "Sunday Trading Laws" is it; no child may purchase anything `cept a Bible on the Sabbath (or somesuch?) ::)
There are still some truly innane laws on Statute! :o

It wouldn't surprise me if that were true... But I never had any problems when I went for the paper at that age.

After near on forty years in the newsagency trade I can state very surely that there is no law about selling newspapers to minors; there never has been and there is not know.
This is just Tesco yet again becoming the unelected moral guardian for the nation because they think they own us all! As with the recent cases of adults being stopped from buying alcohol when accompanied by children, Tesco staff have yet again exceeded their role as purely a retailer.
I have now stopped using Tesco and destroyed my Clubcard in protest. >:( >:( >:(
P.S. The law about not being able to sell certain products on a Sunday, such as Bible's went out with the introduction of the current Sunday trading laws whereby any store in excess of 3,000 sq. ft. can only trade for six hours on a Sunday, except on Christmas Day and Easter Sunday when they must not open at all. All other smaller shops can trade freely, and no shop has any restrictions on what it can sell on the Sabbath.

I quite agree with that sentiment Lizzie... But I thought we were talking about a local shop??? :-? :-?

:y Thanks Lizzie that`s very interesting; I agree these large corporations are becoming laws unto themselves and are indulging in 'social engineering' :o
I`ve always refused to have any loyalty (tracking) card; being a libertarian I`ve hated the idea of my personal shopping habits being tracked and analysed.....and it would seem many in our society are sleepwalking into "1984".

I think you are right....I thought Martin meant that his daughter had been to Tesco, the local shops for them, and he had gone back to them only to hear it was not a problem.....my mistake. But it is something Tesco would do at the moment it seems after all the reports I have read and personally witnessed! ;) Everything else I wrote on this topic is also the case.

It's a bit of Chinese Whispers at times.

I just found the link above and found that Newsagents come under Cat D. Didnt find anything relating to the thread.
However, I did find out that what I was told regards selling Fish on Sundays was illegal isnt actually true, but there may be some truth in it. As the Fidhermen that catch the Fish are not allowed to sell it on Sundays. This drew my interesest as I used to own a Fish and Chip shop many years ago.
You learn something new everyday.
-
I understand what you're saying Lizzie... I had to read the thread again because I thought I had it wrong!!! ;D ;D ;D
Supermarkets are becoming a law unto themselves though...

Was until recently Spar, then lost most stuff and went Coop
-
All our co-op shops around here are fantastic... Mind you, we've always had Divvy here too!!
-
And to think, years ago, my dad used to send me up to the corner shop to get the paper, his tobacco! and a bottle of beer!!! I was only about 8 or 9.
Shop keeper knew us all, and there was never a problem...
As for 'tosco's' I wont use them. I decide what I wish to purchase, NOT them. They forget that they are supposed to be providing a service for us, and are dependant on us giving them our custom, not the other way round.
Far too big for their boots, as far as I am concerned.
-
It wasn't those big Rizla papers was it ::)

We know we are being analysed. we don't get anything embarrasing from there but we do get a lot of points, now why haven't they sussed my petrol usage?
The info. stops at Tescos so not bothered, however I will not accept having my internet usage tracked.
As to all of these things you need to weigh up pros and cons.
Tescos will get business despite the noise and general annoyance due to the amount of them in Worcester no Asdo no Morrisons and I have issues with Sainsburies
