Title: no claims bonus question
Post by: Big_Al on 03 September 2013, 07:57:57
hi all ,

this concerns SWMBO  who now has a "lease" car supplied through her work as a community nurse.

It has occured to me that as the NHS or the local Primary Care Trust insure the car for her , does she still accumulate no claims bonus .

SWMBO had the full 9 years , built up from her own cars ,when she took this vehicle .

But what is concerning me is,  if she decides to go back to  getting & using her own car when this 3 year lease is over , although this is unlikely as she will probably get another one for a furthur 3 years,  will she still be eligable for the full NCB .

If the opinion is that she will have zero no claims in time to come , will it be legal for me to transfer the ownership & there fore insurance for my omega  annually  between her & me , & that way keep both hers & mine max no claims in place ?

Swmbo is already a named driver on my omega insurance & if we were to change around every year I would be a named driver on "her" omega when the V5 is her name .

complicated ain't it  ??? ??? ???

she should ask her lease company  in three year time for proof of no claims status - they will then confirm she has driven and not claimed.  At that stage a new insurer should accept the evidence together with the expired 9 years.  however each insurer is different so you'll need to check the rules they apply at the time.

I'd had a company car for years, different companies and lease companies and when it came to getting my own car it was a bugger of a job getting a NCD. Eventually I did get 50% no claims through a broker so you will need to shop around. :y

Keep the renewal quote from her current insurer, it usually has proof of the NCD she has accrued. Most ins companies ask to see a copy when you change insurers, but LV just told me to keep hold of it in case of a claim.

which is only valid for two years

Can sometimes be accepted for longer .. several mates who have done overseas tours - and thus not held UK insurance for 3 years - have arranged in advance that their no-claims would remain valid IF they could prove a clean history on return to the UK. They then had to convince insurers in the countries to which posted to certify that. All managed it in the end, but sometimes had to faf with several "foreign" insurers before being successful.

Had company cars for years - insurers accepted company letter re no claims status.

Tried using ncb on classic policy (TR4A) - was not acceptable!

thanks for the replies guys . . .

will get SWMBO to check with her insurer as to how it works .

Her 2 years for her own NCB to be valid  runs out next March, so we have plenty of time .

No opinions  posted on my idea of annually changing ownership of the omega between me & her  though  :-\ :-\

maybe thats a no goer  :-\ :-\ :-\

Is there not a problem with the legality of insuring a car that you don't own?
I'm no expert but some things ringing alarm bells for me on that one!

Dont know though :-\,I have had both cars registered in my name, but the missus as the main driver on one and me secondary and visa verse on the other.
Swiftcover have just issued NCB letter with her car policy number on it and 7 years, which has been sent to the new insurer  :)
And my renewal shows that I have 7 years NCB on my policy number, which will be sent to whoever I get insurance with in October!  :-\

Worth a try I suppose? ;)

I think there is  . .  but  . .  . as said if we send off the V5 to change ownership between me to her & vise versa the next year . I will be the registered owner this year  & her next year  .  . me the year after  . . then her  . . omega will be scrap by then I would think  ;) ;) ;)

 ::) ::) ::)wish i'd never started this thread now  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

In exactly the same situation, you do not have to be the owner or the registered keeper to insure a car in your name.......... :y :y

Don't forget .. the V5 isn't proof of ownership, anyway, simply who the registered keeper is. All insurance companies will ask if you are the registered keeper - you can quite happily say no and they'll still quote you.

What proves proof of ownership of a vehicle then  ?   The receipt/ bill of sale ?  :-\ :-\

Nothing does, essentially.. that's why I could write to the DVLA and request a new V5, in my name, for your car (if I had the chassis number). Of course the DVLA will 'attempt' to contact you (by post) to ask if you're OK with that..

According to the huge letters on the front of the V5:
Quote
THIS DOCUMENT IS NOT PROOF OF OWNERSHIP.
It shows who is responsible for registering and taxing the vehicle.

It all seems very odd to me, but it's been that way forever as far as I know.. strange country we live in!

had that happen on a rangerover, I wrote back saying I still have the car, last year I changed the engine in it so told them, when the V5 didnt come back, I rang, to be told "you dont own that car" good job I copied the old V5 before sending it off.
