Title: newbie with a few questions
Post by: carmadman on 10 September 2013, 20:08:19
hi all ive popped into the hello section and thought i could now ask a few questions here
now before i go mad i want to say i have only brought it as a runaround as my disco blew its head gasket so i can keep on the road while i repair it so i dont want to spend much on it

now when i picked it up i had left the interior light on and it had a flat battery so i had to jump it, then i drove it home it seems down on power and does not want to seem to change properly, it also revs ok but idles a little rough
i have searched on here and seem to think its a cam sensor but it does have a reciept from july for a sensor and reset from a respected garage there doest seem to be any light on the dash , the one with the car and spanner through it comes of and goes out

i also noticed yesterday that it drove better if i selected the gears my self but the sport mode had stopped working

it also seems a little flat between 2000 to 4000 rpm?

the radio and info screen is hard to see in day light but the adjuster next to the light swich does not change it
and the stereo does not come out of the drivers door speakers?

i changed the plugs and found the old ones a inch deep in oil so i know i need to change the gasket for that but do you think that it may be something like the egr or something like the sensors i have mentioned

thanks again for a great friendly forum

cam sensor need to be VX not cheapo pattern :y try unplugging maf -if revs ok--thats problem--and do rocker gasket-that causes missfires----

Back to basics, check plugs/coil pack etc.  Remember, its only 140bhp when it left the factory, and its a heavy car, so it won't set the world alight. But should accelerate to 80+ smoothly, if slightly sluggishly.

Display, check the backlight bulbs are OK.

hi again its all what i thought really the plugs are new as i all ready had some and it made it a little better can i ask when you switch ignition on should i have 2 engine lights? i only get 1 which is the one with the spanner thru it
gearbox does not seem right either like i seem to wait a while for a change and seems better if i drive it in manual
it looks like its had a second hand maf and im not sure about the cam sensor is it poss to tell between aftermarket and genuine? is it poss to get a good secondhand one?

I'll have to let a 2.2 owner confirm how many lights come on, soz

Right I've had a good look now and it seems my engine light is the one that's on ( it does not come on with ignition but something is on behind it  not sure if bulbs dropped out) I have blanked the egr but someone had done that first then checked all the breather but some had done that first then I checked the throttle body but you guessed it !!
So I think it may be a problem with the coil pack as its the emission light it seems to smell like its running rich
Seems to still have a slightly rough idle and a little underpowered but that could be me ?
Would I be right in thinking it would be lambda or coil pack

I was thinking of getting a odb ready from ebay does anyone recommend one

Thanks
Andy

hi again
right my reader arrived today and it has the following codes
p1781
p1890
p0706
p1740
p0120
p1120
p1550

i deleted the stored faults to see if anything returned and it seems to drive/idle a lot better
it does have a tiny flat spot between 2-3000 rpm but drives a LOT better than it did
i now bow to your superior knowledge!!
thanks
andy

right ive checked the maintenance guide for the codes and it does not show the top 3
but the other seem to show tps throttle would that be right ?
would it be a faulty tps / peddle ?
thanks

I take it yours is diesel as 2.2 petrols don't have an EGR valve

Scrap that I had my brain in a jar of scrumpy, it's an ICV the f/l Desmond's don't have.
My bad.
